The 2026 Asian Games (ASIAD) in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, recorded the first appearance of 6 new sports. One of them is virtual Taekwondo.
This mixed competition content will gather 16 athletes to compete, direct elimination format at Toyohashi Gymnasium on October 2nd alone.
Virtual Taekwondo was approved by the Asian Olympic Council in June 2026, thereby becoming the first virtual sport in ASIAD history.
Traditional Taekwondo – a martial art and sparring sport of South Korea mainly using kick and punch techniques – is also among the 43 sports held at this year's ASIAD.
The World Taekwondo Federation said that virtual Taekwondo has attracted strong participation in Asia and is also gradually becoming popular in North America and Europe.
However, this sport is still quite unfamiliar even in the traditional taekwondo community. Some Korean coaches at recent tournaments shared that they had never heard of this sport until there was an announcement about including it in the competition program at ASIAD.
Virtual Taekwondo competition rules
It sounds like e-sports but it's not, only viewers are like watching video games.
Virtual Taekwondo combines traditional taekwondo movements with virtual reality technology. Athletes wear virtual reality (VR) glasses and motion tracking devices, allowing them to compete with virtual opponents.
Athletes will stand on 4x4m competition mats placed next to each other and compete in 3 rounds, each round lasting 60 seconds.
Instead of directly hitting each other, the fighters score points based on the force and accuracy of the virtual attacks. The winning athlete is the one who scores the highest on the force scale when the match ends.
One of the important elements of virtual Taekwondo is "Health Bar".
Considered the core component of this sport, each athlete starts the round with 1000 Blood Points (HP). When an athlete successfully performs the attacks, the opponent's HP will decrease.
If HP drops to 0, which means being knocked out, the opponent will win that round.
Athletes need to win 2 rounds to win overall. However, if no one is knocked down, the person with the highest HP when the competition time is over will win that round.
In case HP scores are equal, the sub-indices will be considered in order of priority: number of headshots, number of kicks on target, and final hits.
The virtual format requires athletes to approach this sport in a different way than regular taekwondo. Boxers often prioritize forward kicks over side kicks because they create stronger force and give higher scores in the virtual environment.
Coaches and athletes said that such continuous movement may require higher physical strength than traditional matches.
Virtual Taekwondo achieved great success at the 2023 Olympic Esports Series in Singapore before being officially included in the medal competition at ASIAD 2026.
