Pre-match information
After a 2-4 defeat to Thailand in the semi-finals, the Vietnamese women's futsal team will enter the 3rd place match of the 2026 Southeast Asian Women's Futsal Championship against the Indonesian women's futsal team. This is an opportunity for coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang and his team to close the tournament with a positive result, and at the same time reaffirm their position in the region.
In the past two years, the Vietnamese women's futsal team has won the 2024 Southeast Asian Championship and the gold medal at SEA Games 33. However, entering this year's tournament as the defending champion, the red shirt team has not maintained the expected stability.
In the group stage, Vietnam won against the Philippines 2-0 and Myanmar 5-2, but the 0-2 defeat to Australia in the opening match partly showed problems in the organization of the playing style. Inaccurate handling situations in the midfield area, unsynchronized coordination and defensive errors continued to be revealed in the semi-final match against Thailand.
Against the Golden Temple country opponent, Vietnam had an early opening goal but lost the game when they could not maintain the intensity of pressing and ball control in narrow spaces. Faulty passes in midfield created conditions for the opponent to counter-attack quickly. The deployment of power-play at the end of the match was also not effective, even causing the team to concede more goals.
On the other side, Indonesia also showed progress when they only lost to Australia 2-3 in the semi-finals. Notably, this afternoon's confrontation recreates the women's futsal final at SEA Games 33, where Vietnam once defeated Indonesia to win a historic gold medal. Therefore, this promises to be a highly competitive match.
Although it is only a third-place match, for the Vietnamese women's futsal team, this is not simply a formality match. A victory will help the team maintain a position in the leading group in the region, while creating a positive psychological foundation for the next goals in 2026.
