Young factors make a mark
At the age of 21, Pavithran is attracting attention in the Malaysian squad at the ASEAN Cup 2026. The player from Johor Darul Ta'zim II continues to show confidence when contributing to helping Malaysia defeat the Philippines 1-0, thereby winning the right to enter the semi-finals to meet the Vietnamese team.
The goal against the Philippines was also Pavithran's first goal in the national team jersey. Being voted Player of the Match twice shows the rapid progress of a player with little experience at the international level.
Pavithran admitted to having been under pressure in his first match against Myanmar. Support from the coaching staff, teammates and fans helps the young player gradually adapt to the international playing environment.
“It can be said that in the first match against Myanmar, I felt a little pressure. After that match, first of all, I want to thank coach Tan Cheng Hoe, who always gives me encouragement and support, along with my teammates and all fans,” Pavithran shared.
According to Pavithran, the encouragement of experienced players also helps him relieve pressure and be bolder in handling situations on the field.
Older players also encourage me," he said.
Challenges for Vietnam's defense
Pavithran's progress brings another noteworthy attacking option for Malaysia. The speed, ability to create breakthroughs and confidence of the 21-year-old player can help the home team create situations to put pressure on the Vietnamese national team's defense.
However, the ASEAN Cup 2026 semi-finals will be a much bigger challenge for Pavithran. After his outstanding performances in the group stage, he is likely to receive special attention from the opponent.
The Vietnamese team possesses an experienced defense and will have to control well the players who are capable of creating breakthroughs on the Malaysian side. Among them, Pavithran is a noteworthy name after what he has shown at the tournament.
In the opposite direction, the young Malaysian player also understands that the semi-final will have greater pressure. Pavithran believes that home advantage and the cheers of fans can become a fulcrum for Malaysia to aim for victory.
Looking at tonight's match, all the fans came to the stadium and the stadium was full. I think the match against Vietnam will be the same. The advantage is that we are playing at home. Our goal is still the same: go on the field, fight and win," Pavithran said.
With rising form, Pavithran can become one of the players that the Vietnamese team needs to pay special attention to in the semi-finals. The ability to control space and limit acceleration situations on both wings will be one of the important requirements for the Vietnamese defense.
