Selling and exploring the Tet flower market
Although it is more than 40 days until the Lunar New Year 2025, at this time, traders have begun to import goods and sell flowers and ornamental plants on some streets in Dien Bien Phu City, Dien Bien Province, to serve the needs of the people.
On Nguyen Huu Tho Street - Dien Bien Phu City, one of the areas with many flower and ornamental plant shops, Ms. Khuc Thi Le said: “This year, I imported goods about 10 days earlier than usual. Customers mainly buy small gourd flowers such as primroses, firecrackers, carnations, etc. to plant in advance. Especially on weekends, the number of customers buying increased significantly.”
According to Ms. Le, the main source of goods is imported from northern provinces such as Thai Binh, Hung Yen... Due to the recent floods, which have significantly affected flower production, prices this year tend to increase slightly compared to last year.
These days, the demand for flowers and ornamental plants tends to increase as Christmas and New Year are approaching. “From households to agencies and units, everyone wants to bring the New Year atmosphere with fresh flower pots. The prices are also affordable, so everyone can buy them,” Ms. Le added.
On Vo Nguyen Giap Street, one of the busiest streets in Dien Bien, flower pots and ornamental plants have begun to appear. Ms. Tran Thi Mai - a trader - said that because it is still the beginning of the season, the Tet flower market this year is not as vibrant as in previous years. The reason is that the economic situation is difficult, people are also more cautious in spending.
“This year, I plan to import many types of flowers and ornamental plants from Hanoi and the southern provinces. However, selling Tet flowers is also under a lot of pressure. Since the goods are mainly imported from far away, I have to both sell and survey consumer demand to adjust the appropriate quantity of goods,” said Ms. Mai.
Garden owners busy taking care of Tet flowers
Meanwhile, peach and kumquat gardens in the communes of Muong Thanh basin (Dien Bien district and Dien Bien Phu city) are busy taking care of the flowers so that they bloom in time for Tet.
Present at the garden of Mr. Ta Cong Doanh's family (Che Bien village, Thanh Luong commune, Dien Bien district), the reporter recorded the bustling atmosphere in the peach garden with an area of 2,000 m2 with over 1,000 peach trees.
Mr. Doanh said: “Currently, the family is focusing on the leaf stripping stage so that the peach tree can concentrate on growing buds. Adjusting the blooming time requires experience, closely following the weather to make appropriate adjustments, ensuring the peach blossoms bloom in time for Tet.”
According to Mr. Doanh’s experience, choosing peach varieties is also very important. He mainly grows peach blossoms, a peach variety suitable for the soil and climate of Dien Bien.
With a relatively large number of peach trees, the market is mainly retail within the province. The selling price of each peach tree ranges from 500,000 VND to 2 million VND/tree, depending on the size and shape of the tree. Every year, Mr. Doanh's family earns about 150 million VND from selling Tet peach trees.
Not only selling, he also rents peach trees to serve people's needs. "Renting is considered a solution to help people enjoy the beauty of peach blossoms during Tet without having to spend too much money" - Mr. Doanh added.
