Continuing his working trip to Quang Tri province, on the afternoon of October 30, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh attended an online meeting with communes affected by floods in Quang Tri.
Reporting at the meeting, Mr. Hoang Nam - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province said that from October 26 to 30, there will be heavy rain in the area, with rainfall in many places exceeding 300mm, causing deep flooding in the downstream of Nam Hai Lang, Dien Sanh, Le Thuy communes and landslides in mountainous areas.
The whole province has more than 700 flooded households, 2,100 people affected, and 137 households that had to be urgently evacuated. Floods have left 1 person dead, 1 person missing, more than 5,000 students absent from school; many national highways, provincial roads and inter-commune roads are cut off.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong - Secretary of the Quang Tri Provincial Party Committee said that the local concern is that prolonged rain and heavy rain will cause a high risk of landslides. Currently, Quang Tri province has decided to declare a state of emergency in 2 areas at high risk of landslides.
In areas where floods often occur, in the long term, there needs to be fundamental solutions to cut floodwaters and reduce flooding in key areas of Hai Lang and Trieu Phong, the downstream area of the O Lau River bordering Hue city and Quang Tri. Build dykes and reservoirs to regulate water between the boundaries of the two localities. Support funding for repairing traffic infrastructure works and equipping rescue forces.
Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh emphasized that in the past, Quang Tri province has been affected by 4 storms, but thanks to the proactiveness and carefulness, the province has a timely response plan, the motto of 4 on-site being activated and operated effectively. With the support of the army and police, the province has focused on rescue and damage recovery.
The Deputy Prime Minister requested Quang Tri province to continue reviewing, warning and proactively evacuating people in areas at high risk of landslides; strengthen propaganda on response skills, especially landslides and deep flooding. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that it is necessary to absolutely ensure the safety of life, promptly support food, drinking water, and medicine for people, and not let anyone go hungry or lack medical care. At the same time, there is a long-term plan to adapt to climate change, proactively "living safely with natural disasters".
On the afternoon of October 30, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh and the working delegation visited and presented gifts to households severely flooded in the southern area of Quang Tri province.
Earlier, on the same morning, the Deputy Prime Minister inspected the flooding situation in Huu Tan village (Ninh Chau commune, Quang Tri province) and visited and encouraged the people.
