The Group of emerging economies (BRICS) was officially established on the occasion of the Foreign Ministers' Meetings of Brazil, Russia, China and India held on the sidelines of the Joint Discussion Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2006.
In 2010, with the accession of South Africa, the Group officially took the name BRICS, the first letter after the English names of the 5 founding member countries is Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa. BRICS does not have its own Secretariat but operates under a rotating Chairmanship mechanism held by 5 key members.
In the period 2024 - 2025, BRICS admitted 6 new members including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia and UAE; and established a Partnership Mechanism with 10 countries including Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, thereby enhancing its position in global governance and influence in the world.
Becoming a BRICS partner country affirms Vietnam's position, role, active participation and responsible contribution to multilateral mechanisms, protecting national and ethnic interests, and promoting the country's priorities with common regional and world issues.
At the same time, Vietnam consolidates friendly cooperative relations with BRICS countries, opens more channels for dialogue and contact at all levels with BRICS member countries and partners. Along with that, Vietnam can take advantage of cooperation resources, especially in science and technology, capital, and markets, to serve the country's development strategy.
Vietnam has participated in activities within the BRICS framework in an active and proactive spirit, contributing responsibly to global common efforts, promoting multilateralism and international law.
Vietnam proactively chooses to participate in specific cooperation mechanisms and initiatives, suitable to our priorities, initially contributing to expanding cooperation channels, strengthening experience exchange and accessing new technology initiatives and trends.
