He served as Prime Minister for various terms (2006-2010; 2012-2018) and was re-elected after winning the September 2023 election.

Since officially taking power again (October 2023), Prime Minister Robert Fico has shown determination and played a decisive role in consolidating the state apparatus, directly directing the implementation of many important reform policies, especially adjustments in the judicial and criminal law fields.

Prime Minister Robert Fico always expressed good feelings and valued promoting relations with Vietnam. He had practical support policies, notably creating conditions for the Vietnamese community to be officially recognized as the 14th ethnic minority in Slovakia. He also had 2 official visits to Vietnam (in 2008 and 2016).

Since taking office for his fourth term (2023), Prime Minister Robert Fico has continued to pay attention to and promote the development momentum of bilateral relations. The frequency of high-level contacts between the two countries has been maintained regularly, in which Prime Minister Robert Fico has had many meetings and exchanges with senior Vietnamese leaders on the occasion of attending international forums and conferences.

In 1993, when Slovakia separated from the Czechoslovak Federation, Vietnam and Slovakia declared inheritance of the previous relations between Vietnam and Czechoslovakia, taking February 2, 1950 as the date of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

From 1993 to now, the traditional friendly relations between Vietnam and Slovakia have developed positively, and both sides attach importance to the traditional friendly relations that have been built since before.
