Standing Secretary of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu meets with Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone

On April 9, in Vientiane capital, Politburo member, Standing Secretary of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu had a meeting with Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.

At the meeting, Standing Secretary of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu informed Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone of the successful results of the talks with Standing Secretary of the Secretariat Vilay Lakhamphong; affirming that consistently, Vietnam always values and prioritizes the special "one-of-a-kind" relationship with Laos.

Standing Secretary of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu said that the two countries' unification to elevate and deepen the content of relations into "great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic cohesion" has contributed to firmly consolidating political trust, creating a solid strategic foundation and opening up stronger and more substantial development prospects for the two countries' relations in the new period. The Standing Secretary of the Secretariat highly appreciated the spirit of drastic and specific direction and close coordination between the Governments of the two countries in implementing cooperation contents.

The two sides also agreed to further strongly promote the connection between departments, ministries, branches and localities of the two countries; improve the efficiency of economic, trade and investment cooperation; exploit the potential and additional advantages of each country, strive to bring bilateral trade turnover to sustainable growth, reaching 10 billion USD in the coming time; strengthen strategic connections, connect the two economies, focus on implementing key projects, including transportation connections.

The two leaders agreed on measures to further strengthen relations between the two countries, and at the same time create strong momentum to promote the relationship between the two Parties and the two countries to develop deeply, practically and effectively in the new period; coordinate to effectively implement the agreements reached between the two Parties and the two Governments, especially the results of the Annual Meeting between the two Politburos (December 2025), the Agreement on the 2026 Cooperation Plan, the Cooperation Strategy for the period 2021-2030 and the Bilateral Cooperation Agreement for the period 2026-2030.

The two countries continue to regularly maintain high-level visits and contacts at all levels; strengthen exchanges and coordinate to organize well activities to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in the "Year of Vietnam - Laos Friendship and Solidarity, Laos - Vietnam 2027".

Regarding defense and security relations, the two sides need to coordinate better in preventing cross-border crime, preventing drugs, and cybercrime.

The two sides agreed that it is necessary to create breakthroughs in economic, trade and investment cooperation; connect in space and development infrastructure; prioritize the implementation of strategic projects connecting key transport and energy infrastructure between the two countries.

The two leaders agreed to promote linkages in education, training and human resources, focusing on training a contingent of officials; continue to strongly promote cooperation between localities, especially border provinces, and promote the effectiveness of existing local-level cooperation mechanisms.

The two leaders expressed their belief that, with the high determination of senior leaders and the efforts of ministries, branches, localities, the business community and people of the two countries, Vietnam-Laos relations will continue to develop more and more deeply, substantively and effectively.
