Phu Quoc City receives Type 1 Urban Decision

Announcing the Prime Minister's Decision to recognize Phu Quoc City as a Type I urban area, under Kien Giang province.

On the afternoon of March 14, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province held a ceremony to announce Decision No. 199/QD-TTg dated January 21, 2025 of the Prime Minister on recognizing Phu Quoc City as a Class I urban area under Kien Giang province. Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha attended and directed.

The content of the Decision is to recognize Phu Quoc City as a Class I urban area, under Kien Giang province. The scope of urban recognition includes the entire administrative boundary of the existing Phu Quoc City. In particular, the inner city area is expected to include the entire administrative boundaries of 2 wards (An Thoi, Duong Dong) and 6 communes (Ham Ninh, Duong To, Ganh Dau, Cua Can, Cua Duong, Bai Thom), the suburban area includes the entire administrative boundaries of Tho Chau commune.

In recent years, Kien Giang province in general and Phu Quoc City in particular have implemented breakthrough and flexible measures, in accordance with the socio-economic development conditions of the locality. Mobilize resources from organizations and individuals from all economic sectors at home and abroad to invest in developing tourism products that are highly competitive with countries in the region and the world. Forming tourist routes based on typical tourism products in each area to serve tourists. The city has mobilized capital to build urban infrastructure and rural infrastructure. Many items of the project have been completed and put into use, creating an increasingly enhanced urban appearance.

Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee Tran Minh Khoa said that in 2024, Phu Quoc will reach nearly 6 million tourists, exceeding the plan by more than 70%, an increase of 7.08% over the same period (international visitors by more than 962,000, exceeding the plan by 92.49%, an increase of 70.29% over the same period). Tourism revenue is estimated at VND 2,544 billion, up 44.3% over the same period. By January 2025, there are 321 investment projects still in effect in planning areas with a land use area of about 10,600 hectares, total investment capital of about over 435,500 billion VND.

Phu Quoc City was classified as a type 2 urban area in 2014. After 10 years, the Party Committee, government and people in the province have always made efforts, built, developed, and strived to become a type 1 urban area in the period of 2021 - 2025. The city has focused investment resources to ensure 5 criteria and 63 standards according to the regulations of the National Assembly Standing Committee on urban classification.

Phu Quoc is planned to be a large, modern, high-quality, national-level tourism, resort and international trade center in the region and the world, serving as a driving force to promote tourism development nationwide, making tourism a key economic sector associated with ensuring national security and defense.
