The People's Council of Soc Trang province has just approved the Plan and results of the arrangement of provincial-level administrative units. Accordingly, Soc Trang province will merge with Hau Giang province and Can Tho city to establish a new administrative unit called Can Tho city, the administrative center is located in the current Can Tho city.

The merger plan has clarified the main reasons for choosing the name Can Tho.
One of the key factors is the inheritance of history and cultural thickness. Can Tho has long been the role of an important historical and cultural center of the Mekong Delta. In 1739, this land officially appeared on Vietnam map called Tran Giang, including today's Can Tho area. Recognizing the strategic position of Tran Giang, Tran Mac Thien Tich has focused on building this place on military, economy, trade and culture. The great god Nguyen Cu Trinh, after meeting Mac Thien Tich in 1753, also completely agreed with this importance.
On February 23 ,1876, the Marshal of Saigon issued a Decree to establish Can Tho County, with the capital in Can Tho. Since then, it affirmed the central role of the city in the process of exploring and developing the South, becoming one of the earliest development urban areas of the region.
Choosing the name Can Tho not only preserves cultural identity but also continues the tradition of the land of "white rice in water", where the Vietnamese - Chinese - Khmer cultures converge and intersect.
The second important reason is high branding. As one of the six cities directly under the Central Government and was identified as the Center for Economic - Finance - Logistics of the Mekong Delta, Can Tho has become an attractive name. The selection of this name for the new administrative unit will make the most of the brand advantage, attract investment, improve competitiveness and affirm the position of the economic center of the region.
In addition, this decision also ensures the principle of using one of the existing names, easy to identify, concise, easy to read and easy to remember. Choosing Can Tho (one of the three names that existed before the merger) will help reduce disruption related to documents, budget savings, human resources and time after the merger. Thereby ensuring maximum limitation of the impact on people and businesses due to the need to convert documents and geographical indications.
