Causes and forecasts
World silver prices continue to face pressure as the market awaits monetary policy decisions from the US Federal Reserve (Fed). The possibility of interest rate adjustments to increase may make yields from profitable assets such as bonds more attractive, thereby disadvantaging silver - a precious metal that does not generate yields.
Expectations that the Fed will maintain tight monetary policy also pushed US Treasury bond yields up. 10-year term yields reached their highest level in many years, nearly 5.03%.
On the international market, silver prices did not maintain the slight increase of the previous session and could not exceed the 64 USD/ounce mark. Investors tend to be cautious, waiting for a message from the Fed before making the next trading decision.
Before the Fed meeting, the market almost reflected in the price the possibility of interest rates increasing by 0.25 percentage points. Meanwhile, rising oil prices increased concerns about inflation, thereby continuing to support US bond yields.
Tensions in the Middle East also contributed to boosting demand for the USD, bringing the greenback to its highest level in about two weeks. A strong USD along with rising bond yields are adding pressure on silver prices, which do not generate interest income.
