Gold price forecast
After a week of strong fluctuations, the precious metal is entering a new trading week in a state of stalemate as support from safe-haven demand and central bank buying activities remains present, while the tough monetary policy of the US Federal Reserve (Fed) continues to put pressure.
Last week, the Fed raised interest rates by 0.25 percentage points, bringing the operating interest rate band to 3.75-4%. Notably, the Fed's new forecasts show that the general level of interest rates may remain higher than previously expected. The market therefore continues to adjust expectations about the timing of monetary policy easing. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh and some Fed officials also continue to emphasize inflation risks, while Minneapolis Fed Chairman Neel Kashkari said on September 20 that inflation is still too high across many commodity and service groups.
This is a disadvantage for gold. High interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding a non-genuine asset like gold. In the first session of the week, gold prices slightly decreased to around 4,372 USD/ounce as the market continued to consider the possibility of the Fed maintaining its tightening policy for longer.
Technically, the 4,400 USD/ounce zone is a noteworthy challenge for gold's recovery momentum. Last week, the price has approached this zone many times but has not created a clear breakthrough.
In the opposite direction, the 4,300 USD/ounce area is playing an important supporting role. If the price is maintained above this zone, gold still has the opportunity to continue to fluctuate accumulation and retest 4,400-4,420 USD/ounce.
In case of convincingly overcoming the 4,400-4,420 USD/ounce zone, the next target may expand to 4,450-4,500 USD/ounce. Conversely, if selling pressure increases and the price breaks through 4,300 USD/ounce, the 4,270-4,235 USD/ounce zone will become an area to be monitored.
