The cries and laughter of three children filled the small house of Nguyen Thi Diem Quyen (born in 1999), residing in Phu Huong hamlet, Dong Thai commune, An Bien district, Kien Giang. But the joy was not complete when the cancer was raging and causing her pain.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dung (born in 1972) - Quyen's father - said that at home, there is a daughter and 3 young grandchildren. Every day, Mrs. Tran Thi Nguyet (over 80 years old, Quyen's grandmother) who lives next door helps take care of the 3 children. Mr. Dung is busy teaching at school but still tries to come home at noon to help his children take care of their grandchildren.
Since the day the children were born, no matter what time he was home, he always helped his daughter whenever the children cried. He thought he would be happy with his children and grandchildren, but after the bad news that his daughter had cancer, Mr. Dung was heartbroken with many worries.
Mr. Dung confided: In 2019, his wife died of illness, and since then, the family sold the house they were doing business in the market to return to their hometown. On the land his parents gave him, his family built a solid house, stabilizing their lives for a long time. Ms. Quyen got married in Tra Vinh, but because she saw her father was lonely and her younger brother worked far away, only coming home occasionally, she came to live with him.
In 2023, 3 grandchildren were born, the joy did not last long, nearly 6 months later, Ms. Quyen had persistent pain in her left breast, went to the Provincial General Hospital for examination and was diagnosed with breast cancer. After that, Mr. Dung took his children to Oncology Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City to find a solution to treat the disease.
The doctor prescribed 6 chemotherapy sessions, up to now he has had 5 chemotherapy sessions, the cost of each treatment is more than 150 million VND. To have money to treat his daughter, Mr. Dung sold 3 hectares of land given by his parents. Since his daughter got sick, the source of breast milk for the children has been cut off, the cost of milk and diapers for the 3 children each month is not less than 10 million VND. With an unstable income from his job as a fisherman, his son-in-law has to take care of many expenses by himself. His salary from teaching, if combined, can cover milk, diapers and food expenses for the whole family, but the cost of long-term treatment for his children is beyond his ability.
Since she got sick, Ms. Quyen's health has not been stable, but she has to take care of her three children and, when she has free time, she takes care of the kitchen and housework.
Ms. Quyen shared: “During chemotherapy, I vomited for several days in a row, my body was weak and had no strength, but the house was lonely, my father worked hard to take care of everything, so I had to try to overcome it, doing whatever I could to help. Taking care of 3 children at the same time was really difficult, tiring but I couldn't rest, seeing the children smile and happy made me try harder, that was also the motivation for me to have more strength to overcome the disease."
Mr. Duong Chi Dung - Party Cell Secretary, Head of Phu Huong Hamlet, Dong Thai Commune - said that to share some of the difficulties with Mr. Dung's family, colleagues, friends and the Dong Thai 3 Primary School Union also mobilized cash to support the family. In addition, the locality and the district Front at all levels also sent the family 2 million VND. Although the material is not much, it partly shows sympathy and sharing with the family.
“Diem Quyen’s treatment will require a significant amount of money, so the local government hopes for the community’s support to help her get treatment. Her three children are still very young, and they need their mother to take care of them,” said Mr. Duong Chi Dung.
