In the Intensive Care - Poison Control Room, Hanoi Children's Hospital, baby Le Anh Duong (born November 1, 2025) is hour by hour fighting for life. At two months old, when many babies are still in the warm arms of her family, Anh Duong has had to tie her life tightly to ventilators, catheters and long-term treatments.
Anh Duong is the fourth child in a family in particularly difficult circumstances in Tung Thien ward (Hanoi City). Due to her mother's poor health and risk of pre-eclampsia, doctors were forced to prescribe a cesarean section when the pregnancy was nearly 37 weeks. Born with a weight of about 3kg, after 5 days of monitoring at the hospital, the baby was allowed to go home. However, the joy did not last long, more than ten days later, the baby showed signs of shortness of breath, had to be hospitalized at Son Tay General Hospital for treatment with a diagnosis of respiratory failure and pneumonia. Just a few days after getting rid of oxygen, Anh Duong unfortunately contracted influenza A, the disease progressed quickly, turned purple, severe respiratory failure, forced to have endotracheal intubation and emergency transfer to Hanoi Children's Hospital.
Here, doctors determined that the baby had severe acute respiratory syndrome, septic shock, septicemia, water-electrolyte-alcoholic disorders, necrotizing enteritis, pneumonia due to Klebsiella pneumoniae, gastrointestinal bleeding, urinary tract infections, anemia, non-specific coagulation disorders. The treatment prognosis was prolonged, the cost was high, in which, the baby had to use a specific antifungal medicine of about 6 million VND per day, not covered by health insurance.

The burden of her child's illness piled up on a family that was already economically exhausted. The baby's mother - Ms. Le Thi Ngoc suffered a stroke in 2023, her health seriously deteriorated, and she was no longer able to work. After many years of borrowing money for treatment, by the end of 2024 the family had paid off all debts, but her health was still weak. Recently, after one examination, she continued to be diagnosed with kidney failure and high blood pressure, having to go for examination and take expensive medicine every month. Currently, when taking care of her child at Hanoi Children's Hospital, she is forced to have out-of-line examinations, not covered by insurance, and the medical expenses in the most recent examination amounted to 7-8 million VND.
The boy's father works in the fields and is a freelance painter, with unstable income. Since his child was hospitalized, he has had to quit his job completely to replace his wife in taking care of the child. Every morning, he takes his eldest daughter in 1st grade to school, and then rushes from his hometown to Hanoi to go to the hospital to take care of the child for his wife to rest.
To date, the family has had to advance 70 million VND in hospital fees. The total treatment cost is estimated at more than 207 million VND, of which insurance pays more than 114 million, currently, the family is still short of more than 22 million VND.
According to Ms. Ngoc, all of this money was borrowed by the family from relatives and the baby's father asked to advance his salary.
Initially, Ms. Ngoc did not think it would be so expensive and did not want to ask for community support, but the treatment journey is still long, the cost is increasing day by day, forcing her to put aside her hesitation, hoping to receive community sharing so that baby Anh Duong has more opportunities to live and grow up like other children.
Amidst the constant sounds of machines in the intensive care unit, the life of a two-month-old baby girl is in great need of kind hands. Each help at this time is not just money, but also hope so that a poor family does not have to give up on illness.
