Ms. Nguyen Thi Gai, 70 years old, has lived alone for many years, facing illness, old age and a life of deprivation when no relatives take care of her.
Mrs. Gai was born in 1955, currently living in Vinh Phuc village (Ngoc Hoi commune, Hanoi). The old house she is living in was left by her parents, built many years ago, and has now deteriorated over time. This is the most valuable asset, and also the only residence of Mrs. Gai after her parents passed away.
Mrs. Gai is the daughter of a family of 9 siblings. When she was young, the siblings successively went to work far away, established their own families, each with their own circumstances, leaving her in the countryside to take care of her elderly parents. For many years, Mrs. Gai both farmed and was attached to the craft of weaving hats to earn a living and as a support for her parents in their old age.
Mrs. Gai has never been married, because since she was young she has had many diseases and weak health. The family was already difficult, and hard life soon fell on her shoulders. Since her parents passed away, Mrs. Gai has lived alone...
Mrs. Gai's whole life was associated with manual labor. In her spare time, she worked in the fields, hired to weave hats to earn extra income. The work was hard but helped her take care of her own life. However, age and illness made her working capacity increasingly limited.
Currently, Mrs. Gai suffers from many diseases such as prolonged headaches, stomach disease, joint pain; on days when the weather changes, her body is sore, sometimes she cannot sleep at night. “Some days it hurts too much, I just lie in one place, I can't do anything,” Mrs. Gai said choked up.
When her health permitted, Mrs. Gai wore hats to earn extra income. Although each hat only earned a few tens of thousands of dong, the total income for the whole month was about 1 million dong, Mrs. Gai had money to spend on vegetables and porridge to make ends meet. Many months of weakness, she only earned a few hundred thousand dong, even no income.

The social allowance of 700,000 VND/month is a rare stable source of income for Mrs. Gai. This amount of money she mainly uses to buy medicine, living expenses must be very frugal. The lonely woman earns every penny to live day by day...
According to Mrs. Gai, whenever she is sick, she mainly manages herself, occasionally going to the commune health station to ask for medicine for treatment. Without husband, without children, relatives all live far from home, so all activities in life, from when she is healthy to when she is sick, she has to take care of everything herself...
Talking to Lao Dong reporters, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong - Head of Vinh Trung village (Ngoc Hoi commune, Hanoi) said that in the past time, the locality has always been interested in and grasped Ms. Gai's situation and provided support within its capacity.
However, Ms. Gai lives alone, is old, her health is declining due to many diseases, limited working capacity, and unstable income. Current support only helps her partly cover her immediate life. We hope she continues to receive attention, sharing and help from the community to make life less difficult," Ms. Huong shared.
