LD26118 - Treatment costs for children cost hundreds of millions, families helpless need help

MINH CHÂU |

The family's circumstances were originally difficult, currently Nguyen Thi Van Anh's treatment costs are estimated to be up to 270 million VND, making the family even more exhausted.

For more than a decade, the life of Nguyen Thi Van Anh (13 years old, in Hung Dao commune, Hanoi) has been a series of days associated with hospitals.

Born into a poor working-class family with 4 children, fate cruelly forced Van Anh to befriend the hospital bed. From the age of 2, Van Anh suffered from enteritis and had to be treated in many different hospitals.

Thinking that the pain of illness had passed, at the age of 3, Van Anh had to be hospitalized again due to recurrent enterocolitis, and also discovered epilepsy. Since then, Van Anh has had to be hospitalized 6-7 times a year, and her dream of studying had to be put aside since 4th grade.

In March 2025, Van Anh developed a high fever of up to 39.5 degrees Celsius and lasted for many days. After that, Van Anh was taken by her family to Quoc Oai General Hospital and diagnosed with bacterial diarrhea, moderate anemia, epilepsy, and had fluid rehydration. However, due to unimproved health, Van Anh was transferred to Hanoi Children's Hospital for further treatment.

Here, doctors diagnosed Van Anh with rectal perforation for the 2nd time after surgery, septicemia on the background of epilepsy, septic shock, other identified septicemia, anemia, epilepsy, malnutrition due to protein-energy deficiency, undetermined jaundice, dysfunctional diarrhea, non-specific gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal perforation (no trauma)/rectal perforation, peritonitis, non-specific coagulation disorder, iron deficiency, septic shock...

Van Anh's family circumstances are currently completely exhausted. The child's father works as a painter, a job "someday there is, someday no", with unstable income. As for Ms. Thac, since discovering her child's illness, she has often had to be by her child's side, only when her child is temporarily stable does she take advantage of working part-time to earn money to help her husband take care of the family.

During this hospital trip, Ms. Thac and her husband had to borrow everywhere to have 20 million VND to pay for the hospital fees for their child in advance. However, Van Anh is facing a treatment journey expected to last 3 months with an amount of up to 270 million VND - an unimaginable number for the family.

Sharing with PV, Ms. Dinh Thi Thac said that because her child is often sick, for many years, the couple has only earned enough money to cover hospital fees and medicine, never having a surplus to save. This time, the treatment costs are too high, far beyond the family's endurance, they only know how to try to manage, rely on relatives but it is not enough.

Mr. Dinh Hoa, head of Dai Tao village, Hung Dao commune, said that in the past, Van Anh's family's life was hard, but they could still manage it. However, since Van Anh fell ill and had to be treated regularly, the family's economy became even more difficult.

The door of hope for the 13-year-old girl is gradually closing because of the family's economic hardship. More than ever, Van Anh needs kind hands to join hands to help her have more opportunities to live and return to the loving arms of her family.
