Clause 2, Article 1 of the Law on Amending and Supplementing a Number of Articles of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army 2024 (effective from December 1, 2024) stipulates the amendment and supplementation of Article 13 of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army on the age of active service of officers as follows:
1. Maximum age limit for officers serving in the army according to military rank: Lieutenant: 50; Major: 52; Lieutenant Colonel: 54; Lieutenant Colonel: 56; Colonel: 58; General: 60.
2. When the military has a need, officers with sufficient political qualities, ethics, capacity, health and volunteering can have their active service age extended as prescribed in Clause 1 of this Article for no more than 05 years; in special cases, it can be extended longer according to regulations of the Minister of National Defense.
3. The maximum age limit for officers holding the positions of Corps commanders specified in Points d and e and unit commanders and managers specified in Points g, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, p, q and r, Clause 1, Article 11 of this Law shall be prescribed by the Minister of National Defense but shall not exceed the maximum age limit for officers serving in active service specified in Clause 1 of this Article.
Thus, from December 1, 2024, the age limit for active service of officers of the Vietnam People's Army at the rank of colonel is 58 years old. In cases where the army has a need, officers with sufficient political qualities, ethics, capacity, health and volunteering can have their active service age extended according to regulations but not more than 05 years; in special cases, it can be extended according to regulations of the Minister of National Defense.
