Following the success of the first two parts, Squid Game 3 officially aired last weekend and became a hot topic of discussion.
In the final game, the male lead Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) decided to sacrifice his life to save the child of player 222 Jun Hee (Jo Yuri).
This ending immediately caused controversy. Some opinions criticized the character Gi Hun for being too poor, for saving someone else's child and accepting to die, making his daughter an orphan.
Regarding Gi Hun's choice, director and screenwriter Hwang Dong Hyuk explained: "At first, I imagined a happy ending. Gi Hun survived, ended everything and went to the US to reunite with her daughter. But when I started writing, my thinking changed.
I consider the story I want to tell and consider what is happening in the world. Since the COVID outbreak, economic anxiety and inequality have gotten worse. Threats of war are rising and nationalism is rising.
Looking at a world where we seem unable to stop going in the wrong direction, I began to wonder how we will leave the world for the next generation.
Many young people say they are losing their dreams and hopes, and I feel that the older generation should stop their greed and try to leave something better.
That is why I introduce a child character - symbolizing the future and hope. I want Gi Hun to sacrifice herself for that child. That is the message I want to convey".
There are controversial opinions about the character Gi Hun being too weak and useless throughout the 3 parts of the film even though he is the main character. Regarding this, the director emphasized, "this film does not make Gi Hun a hero".
Gi Hun never intended to be a hero. He doesn't have any special ability, so the best he can do is make a final choice.
But I believe that is the way to change things. Not through a few powerful leaders, but through the actions of many ordinary people, or even below average people, the director explained.
When the reporter mentioned that Gi Hun's death seemed to be a declaration that there would be no sequel to Squid Game. The director confirmed that this was true.

The appearance of the twice-Oscary star, Cate Blanchett, as an employer (like Gong Yoos character) at the end of the film has fueled rumors that Squid Game will expand with a new US version of the film.
However, the director denied it. He said: The arrival of Cate Blanchett does not indicate another season. I also considered an end in which Gi Hun lived and saw another employer in the US.
But once I chose to end with his death, I felt it was over. All the rumors about filming the Hollywood version in December, with me as the director and Cate Blanchett as the lead... are not true.
In addition, the director expressed his interest in the possibility that Lee Byung Hun's Front Man character could be separated into a separate film. However, the director said that he does not have any specific plans for this project.
