Recently, at the Hong Kong Directors Association Awards (China), Shu Qi was honored as the Best New Director, thanks to her debut film directed by her - "Girl".
Girl" tells the story of a girl struggling to grow up in an unhappy family in the 1980s. The film was painstakingly written and meticulously crafted by Shu Qi for 10 years, based on her own growing experience.
Previously, "Girl" was selected for the main competition category at the Venice Film Festival, and helped her win the Best Director award at the 30th Busan International Film Festival.
At this event, the award presenter for Shu Qi is her long-time colleague - director Liu Weiqiang. On stage, when recalling the 3-decade-long collaboration, he humorously "revealed the old story", teasing that Shu Qi when she first entered the profession was once considered arrogant and "snobbish".
30 years ago she was already a "big star"! I remember the audition in Taipei (Taiwan, China), the appointment was at 10 am but she only arrived at 8 pm," Luu Vi Cuong recalled.
He also added that when asked about the reason for being late, Shu Qi replied very calmly: "I got drunk at a club so I couldn't get up". After saying that, Liu Weiqiang also did not forget to add: "But we have cooperated for 30 years, filmed 13 movies with her already".
This moment immediately stirred up the atmosphere, turning the award ceremony into a friendly "exposure" between old friends.

Facing that teasing, Shu Qi gave a clever answer in the subsequent interview. She laughed and explained: "I'm not arrogant, the whole industry knows it's a misunderstanding!".
The reaction of the 49-year-old actress and director shows that this is just a funny anecdote that has been circulated in the industry for a long time.
She also revealed that her presence to receive the award was thanks to a "mandatory" call from Liu Weiqiang: "He called to make me definitely go home, and said this is an award that he himself has never received! ". Shu Qi's words both expressed gratitude to her predecessor and indirectly emphasized the value of the award voted by colleagues.
Another detail that was also noticed by the media is that in the speech, Shu Qi did not specifically mention her husband Stephen Fung.
When asked about this issue, Shu Qi gently explained: "Let's thank him once at the end of the year, otherwise if he listens to me every time, he will probably be tired.
Her humorous answer immediately shifted the public's attention from scrutinizing "marriage" to a harmonious everyday moment.

According to Sohu, this is not the first time Shu Qi has shown her ingenuity when talking about her career and family. At the Busan Film Festival 2025, when receiving the award, she publicly thanked Stephen Fung for "marrying a wife who is not good at coming home". And he humorously replied that "there is no place left for cups in the house".
This time, when reporters asked if Phung Duc Luan needed to "clean up" the new trophy, Shu Qi confidently replied: "My house is very big, this trophy is not big either.
The media assessed that Shu Qi's short statement both dispelled curiosity about private space and sketched an image of a family large enough to contain the career and personality of both.
