The Dien Bien Phu victory in 1954 is considered the greatest military victory in the resistance war against France of our army and people. The victory forced France to sign the Geneva Accords (July 21, 1954) on ending the war and restoring peace in Indochina.

President Ho Chi Minh, General Vo Nguyen Giap and comrades in the Central Political Bureau of the Party decided to launch the Dien Bien Phu campaign in December 1953 in Dinh Hoa, Thai Nguyen.French troops counterattacked to retake the Independence stronghold on March 15, 1954. At 2 am on March 15, 1954, Regiment 165/Battalion 312 and Regiment 88/Battalion 308 attacked the Independence stronghold cluster. By 6:30 am, we occupied the battlefield, destroyed the reinforced North African Battalion, killed more than 400 people, and captured nearly 200 people alive. Lieutenant Colonel Pirot (Piroth), Artillery Commander of the Stronghold Group, committed suicide because he could not destroy the enemy artillery as promised to Nava.Debris of the B24 aircraft, the 50th aircraft of the French army shot down at the Ban Keo stronghold cluster on April 20, 1954. At 11:40 am, Company 828 of Battalion 394 shot down the 50th aircraft of the French army. That was the B.24 (Privateer) 4-engine bomber fortress, with a crew of 9 people, first shot down on the Vietnam battlefield. The bombs in the enemy's compartment provided the engineering troops with explosives for us to place in the A1 tunnel in early May.The troops dug trenches to tighten the encirclement of the central sub-zone on March 30, 1954. This was the second attack (March 30, 1954 - April 30, 1954) with our combat plan of occupying the eastern hills, airports, clearing supply and reinforcement routes, tightening the encirclement, gradually narrowing the scope of occupation and airspace of the central sub-zone.Amidst the fierce trenches of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954, the soldiers took the opportunity to read letters from the rear. The letters became a great source of spiritual encouragement, adding will and faith to the soldiers on the fierce battlefield.At about 5:30 pm on May 7, 1954, the "Determined to fight, determined to win" flag fluttered on the roof of General De Castries' bunker, signaling that the Dien Bien Phu Campaign had been completely victorious.General De Castries and the entire staff of the Dien Bien Phu stronghold Group surrendered. Comrade Ta Quoc Luat, Company Commander of Company 360, Battalion 130, Regiment 209, Division 312 recounted: "As soon as I reached the tunnel entrance, I shouted loudly: Drop your guns, raise your hands, stop the gunfire, stop bombing. All the officers raised their arms, only De Castries was tearing documents, I immediately pointed my gun at him and said why didn't he raise his arms, De Castries quickly raised his hand to shoulder level, I ordered the official to extinguish the fire, the document block had just been burned and shouted loudly: All of you follow me! I led De Castries and his entire staff out of the tunnel and escorted them to the Regiment command headquarters.
