The film is written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, produced by BreakThru Films of Poland and Trademark Films of the UK.
The film uses 65,000 oil paintings on fabric to create movement in the film at a speed of 12 photos/second. These frames were elaborately created by 125 artists around the world at the film crew's studios in Poland and Greece. The paintings use the same trick from Van Gogh to make the film seem like it is being told by the talented artist himself. In addition, 120 masterpieces by Vincent Van Gogh are also incorporated into film scenes.
Notably, the paintings are Van Gogh's passionate life, cruel fate and mysterious death. He was called by many names: a god who died for his piety, a prostitute, a crazy person, a genius, a person who could not sit still. Vincent Van Gogh's true identity is only partly revealed through his letters to his younger brother and is overshadowed by time and legends. In his final letter, he wrote: "We cannot say anything more than our paintings". The filmmakers did the right thing and let the paintings tell the true story of Vincent Van Gogh.
The first Loving Vincent was filmed in real people, then the frame was repainted with oil paint. The ultimate effect is the combination of the actors' acting and the performance of the painters. The film features many familiar faces such as Douglas Booth, shar shar sharp Tomlinson, Jerome personal and Saoirse Ronan...
