Khi tàu của cát tặc trên sông Gianh bị bắt quả tang, chủ một bãi tập kết thừa nhận đã thuê người dân dùng tàu hút cát trái phép. Trong lúc đó, chính quyền hai xã Tân Gianh và Tuyên Hóa (tỉnh Quảng Trị) đưa ra nhiều lý do, cho rằng khó xử lý cát tặc.
Nhưng sau đó, với những thông tin do Báo Lao Động cung cấp, rằng người dân đã phản ánh đến lãnh đạo xã, nhưng xã chưa xử lý quyết liệt, thì 2 địa phương lập tức vào cuộc, và bắt giữ ngay tàu khai thác cát trái phép.

Tàu hút cát cứ dàn hàng khai thác trái phép đêm này sang đêm khác, nhưng khi lên phương án đánh án thì sông Gianh lại… êm đềm. Không bỏ cuộc, nhóm phóng viên Báo Lao Động đã kiên trì cùng lực lượng Phòng Cảnh sát Kinh tế Công an tỉnh Quảng Trị ăn bờ ngủ bụi, quyết tâm đưa nhóm cát tặc ra ánh sáng để trả lại sự yên bình cho sông Gianh.

Đêm xuống, những chiếc tàu công suất lớn như bóng ma lù lù xuất hiện trên sông Gianh (tỉnh Quảng Trị) chậm rãi thả vòi xuống đáy sông hút cát. Có địa điểm, 4 chiếc dàn hàng, mỗi chiếc tàu rút ruột khoảng 20m3 đến hơn 30m3. Khi cát tặc rời đi, từng mảng đất màu đổ ụp bởi bên dưới là hàm ếch. Chứng kiến sinh kế ngày một mất đi, người dân lao ra bờ sông tìm cách ngăn cản, nhưng dần bất lực. Rồi họ tìm đến Báo Lao Động, và nhóm phóng viên lên đường với quyết tâm đưa cát tặc trên sông Gianh ra ánh sáng.
