Poland is researching a new space defense system to protect satellites and important infrastructure from high-tech threats. The Sentinel Space Layer project is designed as a smart shield combining AI with high-power microwave weapons.
This system is developed by the Polish defense technology company ARES Shield AI. According to the design, Sentinel Space Layer will use a radar network and advanced sensors to detect, track targets and provide data to the weapon system.
The center of the system is high-power microwave (HPM) technology, capable of emitting strong energy pulses to disable the target's electronic system. This method is believed to be able to paralyze the enemy's equipment without causing many debris or unexpected damage.
According to developers, Sentinel Space Layer is designed to protect satellites in orbit from electronic threats and modern weapons. The system can also support defense against drones to protect important infrastructure on the ground and in the air.
According to ARES Shield AI Company, recent technological advances have made the development of new defense systems more urgent than ever. Many types of weapons that once only appeared in science fiction movies have now become real threats on the battlefield and in space.
ARES Shield AI said that the project has received a starting capital of about 1 million Polish zlotys (equivalent to more than 270,000 USD) from private investors. This funding will be used for the initial research and development phase.
In the next 18 months, the research team plans to manufacture the first prototype and conduct ground tests. After that, the system will be tested on orbit and conduct integrated demonstrations with defense partners.
According to the plan, Sentinel Space Layer is designed to target NATO allies as well as European armed forces. If progress is favorable, the system can reach full operational capability in the next 5 years.
