Israel has just introduced a hybrid unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) propulsion system promoted as "the world's first true hybrid system", marking a significant step forward in unmanned aerial technology.
This system is named Native Parallel Hybrid, developed by Lowental Hybrid Company and integrated into its UAV platforms by Elbit Systems, Israel's leading defense corporation.
Native Parallel Hybrid is a parallel hybrid engine system, combining internal combustion engines and electric motors in a unified architecture.
The special feature of this technology is the ability to seamlessly switch between two operating modes without major changes in the aircraft frame design.
Thanks to that, UAVs can take advantage of both energy sources, which are high efficiency of traditional fuel and smoothness and saving of electricity.
According to Lowental Hybrid, the new system can extend the flight time of UAVs up to five times compared to the traditional configuration.
The battery can be recharged while flying, significantly increasing operating range and duty time.
Another advantage is the low noise level, suitable for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) activities that require high secrecy.
This hybrid engine technology is confirmed to meet NATO standards and is compatible with many different UAV lines.
Elbit Systems said that initial flight tests have confirmed the stability, efficiency and reliability of the system, opening up prospects for large-scale deployment.
In a press release, Doron Fridman - CEO of Lowental Hybrid - emphasized that the partnership with Elbit Systems is an important technology milestone.
“Elbit is a global leader in the field of UAVs and we are proud to bring a truly hybrid engine system into a tactical platform. This cooperation helps improve durability, reliability and simplicity in operation,” Mr. Fridman said.
The agreement between the two parties is built on an initial investment of 1.4 million USD from Elbit Systems, with plans to upgrade and expand the system in the future.
It is expected that the cooperation relationship will last for more than 10 years, in which Lowental Hybrid will provide continuous technical support for UAV platforms equipped with hybrid engines.
Observers believe that Elbit's integration of the Native Parallel Hybrid system not only helps increase the operating efficiency of UAVs, but also shapes new development trends in the field of military unmanned aerial vehicles.
As the need for longer range, longer operating hours and higher stealth increases, hybrid engine solutions may become a new standard for next-generation UAVs.
The combination of innovative startup technology and a long-standing defense corporation like Elbit Systems is expected to promote major advances in the UAV industry, not only in Israel but also in the global defense market.
