On December 7, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province held a meeting with the interdisciplinary working group of the Ministry of Construction on the appraisal of the two urban classification projects of Rach Gia city and Phu Quoc city.
At the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Giang Thanh Khoa said that Rach Gia City and Phu Quoc City were classified as type 2 urban areas in 2014. After 10 years of being recognized as type 2 urban areas, the Party Committee, government and people in the province have always made efforts to build and develop the two cities; striving to achieve type 1 urban areas in the period of 2021 - 2025.
In recent times, the two cities have focused investment resources to ensure 5 criteria and 63 standards according to the regulations of the National Assembly Standing Committee on urban classification.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Giang Thanh Khoa requested the two cities to continue to maintain and achieve higher levels for the criteria and standards that have been achieved. For the criteria and standards that have been achieved on average or not yet achieved, relevant departments and branches are requested to continue to pay attention and support the two localities, have plans to build development orientations as well as invest to achieve the prescribed standards. Regarding the opinions of the working group, the two localities should receive and complete the project data as soon as possible, advise the Provincial People's Committee to submit to the Ministry of Construction to carry out the next procedures.
Concluding the meeting, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Viet Hung acknowledged that the authorities of Kien Giang province and the two cities have made great efforts in investing in developing technical, social and urban infrastructure.
According to Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Viet Hung, as the administrative and cultural center of Kien Giang, Rach Gia City has had synchronous development in infrastructure, socio-economy and has the potential to develop further in the coming time, in line with the orientation of becoming a class 1 urban area under the province. With Phu Quoc being the first island city of Vietnam, it has had outstanding development, affirming its special position in the Mekong Delta region as well as the whole country.
Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Viet Hung requested relevant units in Kien Giang province to fully absorb the opinions of members of the interdisciplinary working group of the Ministry of Construction and promptly complete the report. At the same time, special attention should be paid to some contents such as: reviewing the accuracy of permanent population data in administrative units, calculating the converted temporary population; reviewing and supplementing information on urban public works in the area; completing and editing illustrative films on the current status of urban development, proposing to classify according to requirements, etc.
Previously, on December 5 and 6, the working delegation surveyed and assessed the current status of urban development in Rach Gia City and Phu Quoc City, at locations such as: typical urban areas, industrial parks, social infrastructure works; technical infrastructure connections for electricity supply, water supply, wastewater treatment; cultural works - relics, etc.
