On June 12, the People's Committee of Nam Nha Trang ward said that the locality had widely consulted people before handling the mangrove trees growing outside the design along the Quan Truong River.
According to the survey results, out of a total of 12,942 households consulted, 12,103 households (accounting for 93.5%) agreed to keep the existing mangrove trees along the Quan Truong River. Meanwhile, 839 households (accounting for 6.5%) did not agree to keep these trees.
The dyke line of about 4-5km long growing along both sides of the Quan Truong River is currently one of the obstacles that makes the embankment project belonging to the Tac - Quan Truong River downstream management project, with a total investment of about 590 billion VND, unable to complete handover for many years due to not being in the initial design documents.
Before organizing the opinion poll, the local government publicly announced the two options along with specific advantages and limitations for people to consider and choose.
For the option of not approving the existence of existing trees, the advantage is to restore the design cross-section of the project, not affecting the structure, ensuring flood drainage capacity and meeting the acceptance conditions according to legal regulations.
However, this option may generate dissenting opinions from a part of the population and investors in the area due to its impact on the environmental landscape.
Conversely, the plan to keep the rows of trees is assessed to contribute to increasing aesthetics, improving the living environment and regulating the air in the project area.
However, keeping the mangrove trees also contains many inadequacies such as affecting the structure of the works, causing peeling of the embankment surface, obstructing the flow and flood drainage system. Dense trees can increase the risk of localized siltation and flooding during the heavy rainy season.
This option also entails the requirement to adjust the project, add items, incur costs for management, care, maintenance and clearing of green trees.
In June 2026, the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Agricultural and Transport Works reported to the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province on the plan to handle green trees at the refinery belonging to the Tac - Quan Truong river downstream management project.
Up to now, the design consulting unit has completed the clearing plan, removing trees outside the design. The estimated cost for cutting, unloading and transportation is about 572 million VND, expected to be implemented before the 2026 rainy season.
The investor also proposed that the Provincial People's Committee allow the use of the project's contingency funds to carry out clearing, and at the same time seek opinions from departments, branches and localities to ensure the feasibility of the plan.
Previously, in May 2026, Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee Trinh Minh Hoang assigned the investor to coordinate with departments, branches and localities to urgently implement a plan to remove trees not in the design, and restore the project according to the approved dossier. Thereby, ensuring the safety of the project, flood drainage capacity and project acceptance conditions according to regulations.
