An Giang discovers artifacts carrying information about martyrs with names, hometowns, and years of sacrifice

NGUYÊN ANH |

An Giang - Officials and staff of the team taking DNA biological samples of martyrs' remains discovered a cardboard with relatively clear names, hometowns, and years of sacrifice.

In the process of deploying DNA biological sample collection of martyrs' remains to serve the work of identifying identities at Tri Ton Martyrs' Cemetery (An Loi hamlet, Tri Ton commune, An Giang province), Team No. 01 of Steering Committee 515 of the Provincial Military Command of An Giang discovered an artifact carrying personal information of a martyr, opening up another important basis for identity verification.

Accordingly, on July 31, 2026, when excavating the tomb to take DNA biological samples in Zone A, lot 05, row 11, tomb number 531, officials and staff of the sampling team discovered a plaque still clearly recording the words: "Nguyen Van Thuan - Long Thanh, Yen Thanh, Nghe An - Sacrificed on February 16, 1973".

According to the An Giang Provincial Military Command, the discovery of artifacts that still retain the full name, hometown and date of sacrifice of the martyr is a particularly meaningful case in the DNA sampling process. This is an important source of information to compare records, verify relatives and conduct DNA testing, contributing to accurately identifying the martyr's remains.

An Giang Provincial Military Command is coordinating with functional agencies to continue reviewing and verifying information related to martyr Nguyen Van Thuan. This is one of the rare cases that still retains identification information after many years of burial, creating favorable conditions for verification, comparison of records and DNA testing to identify martyrs. The discovery of this information is of special significance, contributing to opening up opportunities to bring the names of those who sacrificed to their families and homeland after more than half a century.

Currently, the DNA sampling team has taken samples of remains according to professional procedures, and at the same time coordinated with functional agencies to continue verifying dossiers, comparing information and carrying out DNA testing steps according to regulations. If the test results match the samples of relatives, martyr Nguyen Van Thuan will be identified, contributing to the implementation of the goal of the "500 days and nights" Campaign in the search, repatriation and identification of remains of martyrs with missing information.

The discovery of information about martyr Nguyen Van Thuan is not only meaningful for professional work but also a hope for relatives of martyrs and a testament to the persistent efforts of forces that are day and night performing the task of expressing gratitude to those who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.
