On the evening of March 4, Mr. Mua A Khay, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng An Commune, Muong La District, confirmed that an incident had just occurred in the area where two primary school students ate leaves with their fingers, causing one student to die.
The two students in the accident were identified as T.T.D. (grade 4) and T.T.T. (grade 5), both studying at Chieng An Primary and Secondary School, both residing in Han Trang village and are boarding students.
According to information from local authorities, the incident occurred on the afternoon of March 2, when the two students were on their way from home to school to prepare for the new school week. While traveling, the two picked and ate the leaves.
After eating the fingers, both students showed signs of poisoning. T.T.T. was relieved and was quickly taken by his family to a district hospital about 40km away for emergency care. Thanks to timely treatment, T. was out of danger and is gradually recovering.
However, T.T.D. fell into critical condition with symptoms of sluggish breathing, purple lips, heart failure and respiratory failure. Although he was taken to the commune health station by relatives for first aid, D. did not survive due to the poison's rapid and strong impact.
Finger Leaf is one of the most doccious plants in Vietnam. Just eating a small amount can cause heart failure, respiratory failure and death in a short time if not given timely emergency care. In the northern mountainous provinces, the situation of children and people accidentally or intentionally eating tangerines still occurs, leaving many heartbreaking consequences.
