In recent times, Binh Thuan province has focused on preventing IUU fishing (illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing) with many solutions. Currently, the whole province of Binh Thuan has 1,996 fishing vessels with a length of 15 meters or more installed with VMS (vehicle monitoring equipment), reaching 100% of fishing vessels in operation.
According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Binh Thuan province, the management and operation of the journey monitoring system has been strictly implemented by the authorities, promptly detecting fishing vessels without connection to handle according to procedures and regulations. From the beginning of 2025 to now, the situation of fishing vessels losing VMS connection at sea has decreased significantly. As a result, no fishing vessels crossed the sea boundary; no fishing vessels over 24 meters without connection for more than 10 days.
The Provincial Border Guard has directed Border Guard stations to increase the peak period of patrolling and controlling tasks on rivers and at sea, resolutely not allowing people and fishing vessels to go to sea when they do not ensure working conditions. 100% of fishing vessels 15 meters or longer must have a VMS connection when operating at sea. The force is also determined not to allow people and vehicles that violate the conditions of practicing at sea and strictly handle IUU violations.
In addition, the fisheries protection force organized surprise patrols at fishing ports. The representative offices for fisheries control at the ports conduct inspections of fishing vessels entering and leaving the port in accordance with the prescribed criteria.
In the coming time, functional sectors in Binh Thuan will continue to coordinate to synchronously deploy solutions to manage and control high-risk fishing vessels to promptly detect and prevent violations from a distance. Continue to grasp the situation, investigate, and handle organizations and individuals who broker and connect fishing vessels to illegally exploit foreign waters and acts of sending, receiving or intentionally disabling VMS equipment to violate foreign waters.
At the same time, the province will fully update information in the national fisheries database and the VMS system for accurate and timely management. At the same time, a list of unqualified vessels is made for the authorities to closely monitor and strictly handle violations to maintain positive results in preventing IUU fishing.
