On the morning of May 26, the Nha Trang Bay Management Board said that it had recorded whales appearing in the Hon Mun protection sub-area, belonging to Nha Trang Bay. This is considered a positive sign for the marine ecosystem in the bay area.
Before the appearance of whales, the Nha Trang Bay Management Board issued a warning to ensure safety for this rare marine animal, while limiting negative impacts from tourism and waterway traffic activities.
Accordingly, organizations, individuals and vehicles operating in the bay are requested not to approach whales at a distance of less than 100m to avoid affecting the nature of the species.
Nha Trang Bay Management Board also requested not to drive vehicles to chase, block the front, separate the mother fish from the young, or intentionally steer the ship into the middle of the fish.
For inland waterway vehicles serving tourism, functional agencies request not to gather crowded around whale areas; reduce speed, limit noise and turn off engines when stopping observation to avoid causing stress for individual animals.
In addition, vehicles do not use unmanned aerial vehicles (flycams) at low altitudes to limit noise affecting the navigation and communication activities of whales.
According to the Nha Trang Bay Management Board, whales use low-frequency sound waves to navigate and communicate. Therefore, noise from engines, flying equipment or loudspeakers can disrupt the species' biological function and behavior.
This agency also proposed to strengthen propaganda to raise awareness for the community, tourists and vehicle operators about the responsibility of protecting whales and wild marine animals.
In case whales or rare marine animals are detected, people are advised to immediately notify the Nha Trang Bay Management Board for coordination in protection.
Nha Trang Bay Management Board emphasized that all violations of regulations on protecting wild marine animals will be handled according to legal regulations.
