On February 20, functional agencies of Quang Ngai province warned people that the act of playing "cua bau", "xoc dia" disguised as gambling will be strictly handled according to regulations.
Bau crab is originally a popular folk game during Tet, with a gentle entertainment value in the family. However, when distorted into a form of gambling with large amounts of money, this game becomes an illegal gambling behavior.
Many people initially only bet a few tens of thousands of VND "for fun", but the more they play, the more they lose, leading to anger and borrowing money to recoup losses. The consequence is losing money, losing time, and even arising conflicts and clashes.
Many cases are detected by functional forces, administratively sanctioned, and even criminally prosecuted. According to the provisions of law, illegal gambling can be fined, non-custodial reform or imprisonment depending on the severity of the violation.
Worryingly, gathering to gamble also poses a risk of insecurity and social disorder in the locality. When losing gambling, some subjects may have the intention to steal and rob to have money to continue playing. Many families fall into discord because relatives indulge in gambling right after Tet, especially in the western mountainous area of Quang Ngai.
The Police Agency recommends that people be alert and not let gambling affect the family economy and long-term life. Local authorities also need to strengthen propaganda, inspection, and strictly handle gambling dens, "xoc cua bau"...
