For a long time, when talking about anaphylactic shock, people only thought it happened in adults. However, anaphylactic shock in children is a quite dangerous phenomenon, happens quickly, with many worrying symptoms.

Anaphylaxis in children comes from many causes.

The Pediatric Center - Bach Mai Hospital has received many cases of children admitted to the hospital in a life-threatening state of anaphylaxis. The most recent case is the case of patient Ly Anh Hao (name has been changed), born in 2017, Ha Giang, who was transferred to a private hospital in a state of high fever, infectious rash, itchy rash all over the body, fatigue...

Through examination, the doctors learned that 5 days before being admitted to the hospital, the patient had a dry cough, no fever, the family bought antibiotics, cough medicine, anti-inflammatory medicine to take. There were dozens of different types of medicine that the family bought for the child to take. After taking the medicine for 1 day, the patient had a stomachache, fever of nearly 38 degrees Celsius, itching, rash all over the body, the family continued to give the child anti-allergy medicine, but it did not help, the child had more red pimples and itching, severe stomach pain. The family transferred to Bach Mai Hospital.

Here, the patient was diagnosed with grade 2 anaphylaxis, suspected to be due to a drug allergy. Fortunately, the patient was treated immediately according to the anaphylaxis protocol for children at a lower-level hospital and there was a risk that the patient could have stage 2 shock and the child was still in a very serious condition, so he was transferred to the Pediatric Center - Bach Mai Hospital for further treatment.

Associate Professor, Dr. Ta Anh Tuan, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine Intensive Care, National Children's Hospital, recalled treating a child who suffered anaphylactic shock after receiving an antibiotic injection. The patient was Tieu Bao (name has been changed), 3 years old, from Son La. Three days before being admitted to the hospital, the child had a high fever and cough. At the local hospital, the child was injected with antibiotics containing ampicillin and sulbactam. After the third injection, the child appeared cyanotic, had convulsions all over the body, and vomited pink foam. The child was diagnosed with acute pulmonary edema, circulatory failure/grade III anaphylactic shock after receiving an antibiotic injection. Fortunately, the patient received timely emergency care, so after 5 days of intensive treatment at the Department of Internal Medicine Intensive Care, the child was removed from ECMO and weaned off oxygen.

Preventing anaphylactic shock in children

Through the reality of clinical cases of anaphylaxis requiring emergency and intensive treatment at the Pediatric Center - Bach Mai Hospital, doctors note that anaphylactic shock in children is caused by many reasons, of which the 3 main reasons causing this phenomenon are respectively some types of drugs such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, anesthetics, vaccines, serums, ... followed by food and venom of insects such as bees, ants, ...

Clinical manifestations of anaphylaxis are very diverse in many organs such as: Respiratory (nasal congestion, sneezing, laryngeal edema, difficulty breathing, bronchospasm, respiratory muscle contraction, apnea...), Cardiovascular (tachycardia, hypotension, arrhythmia, cardiac arrest...), Neurological (shivering, sweating, fever, headache, dizziness, convulsions, coma, restlessness, trembling limbs, dizziness, fainting...), Dermatological (urticaria, erythema, itching).

The causes of anaphylaxis are very diverse, the main ones are drugs and chemicals that enter the body through food, drink, inhalation, or through the blood such as injections, infusions... In medicine, there are many types of drugs that need to be noted that can cause anaphylaxis such as antibiotics, anesthetics, anesthetics, anti-inflammatory drugs, vaccines, intravenous fluids, contrast agents...

Doctors recommend that you absolutely do not buy medicine for your children without a prescription from a specialist at a medical facility, do not let children come into contact with chemicals, do not play in environments with insects, and strictly manage their food and drinks.
