Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just issued a plan to implement the project to invest in the construction of Can Gio bridge according to the public-private partnership (PPP) method, BT contract (build - transfer).
The Can Gio bridge project was started on January 15, 2026. The project has a total length of more than 6.3 km (the main bridge is nearly 3 km long; the approach road and bridges on the route are more than 3.2 km long).
Can Gio bridge is designed with a scale of 6 lanes, including 4 lanes for motorized vehicles and 2 mixed lanes, with a design speed of 60 km/h.
The highlight of the project is the main cable-stayed bridge with two tower pillars, a navigation clearance of 55 m, equivalent to Binh Khanh bridge on the Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway.
In addition to the main bridge, the project also builds three bridges on the route including: Song Cha bridge, more than 640 m long; Tac Song Cha bridge, more than 64 m long; and Rach Muong Ngang bridge (parallel road on Nha Be side) including two units, each unit 64 m long.

The preliminary total investment of the project is over 13,200 billion VND according to the BT contract, divided into two component projects.
In which, the compensation, support and resettlement project has capital of more than 2,533 billion VND from the Ho Chi Minh City budget; the BT contract bridge construction project has a total capital of more than 10,668 billion VND, mostly mobilized by investors.
According to the implementation plan, in April 2026, relevant units will complete the dossier to submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for approval of the investment project. The BT project contract is expected to be signed on June 1, 2026.
Regarding site clearance, the city will hand over a part of public land and water surface area to investors before June 1st to serve the commencement of construction. The agricultural land is expected to complete site clearance in June 2026, while the scope of non-agricultural land is completed in August of the same year.
According to the set schedule, the Can Gio bridge project will start construction in June 2026, the main bridge will be closed on December 31, 2028, and inaugurated and put into operation on June 30, 2029.
Currently, Binh Khanh, Can Gio, An Thoi Dong and Thanh An communes (formerly belonging to Can Gio district) do not have direct roads connecting to the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
People mainly have to cross Binh Khanh ferry, which is often overloaded, especially on weekends and holidays, causing prolonged congestion and affecting tourism activities as well as socio-economic development of the region.
When completed, Can Gio bridge will not only solve the traffic problem but is also expected to become a new architectural symbol of the city. The travel time from the center of Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio will be shortened to about 40-50 minutes, instead of nearly 2 hours as at present.
The project is also of special significance in the context that Can Gio is implementing a coastal urban area project with a scale of 2,870 ha, and at the same time preparing to build a sea route more than 14 km long connecting to Vung Tau.
When projects are implemented synchronously, the Can Gio area is expected to become a new driving axis, expanding Ho Chi Minh City's development space towards the sea.
