HCMC - The Can Gio bridge project has a total length of 6.3 km, a total of more than 13,200 billion VND under the BT contract, expected to start construction in 2027, replacing Binh Khanh ferry.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has just submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee a pre-feasibility study report for the Can Gio bridge construction project under the form of public-private partnership (PPP), BT contract (build - transfer).

According to the report, the project has a total length of more than 6.3 km. Of which, Can Gio Bridge is nearly 3 km long; the approach road and bridges on the route are more than 3.2 km long.

The starting point of the project is on Road 15B (Nha Be Commune), about 500 m from Muong Ngang Canal, then cut through Nguyen Binh Street and cross the Soai Rap River. Towards Binh Khanh commune, Can Gio bridge connects to the intersection between Rung Sac road and Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway.

The project is designed with 6 lanes (4 mechanical lanes, 2 mixed lanes), designed speed of 60 km/h.

Can Gio Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with two towers, with a clearance of 55 m, equivalent to Binh Khanh Bridge on the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway.

In addition to the main bridge, the project also builds three bridges on the route: Song Cha bridge is over 640 m long, 29.5 m wide; Tac Song Cha bridge is over 64 m long, 40 m wide; Rach Muong Ngang bridge (on the parallel road on the Nha Be side) consists of two units, each bridge is over 64 m long, 7.75 m wide.

The total preliminary investment of the project is more than 13,200 billion VND (including interest).

Of which, construction cost is VND 7,286 billion, compensation, support and resettlement cost is VND 2,533 billion; interest cost is VND 636 billion, the rest is management, consulting and reserve fees.

The Can Gio Bridge project is divided into 2 component projects:

Component project 1 - Compensation, support and resettlement (2,533 billion VND) using Ho Chi Minh City budget capital. In total, 43 households were affected (27 households were completely affected, 16 households were partially affected), of which Nha Be commune accounted for 33 cases, Binh Khanh commune district had 10 cases.

Component project 2 - Construction of Can Gio bridge under a BT contract with a total capital of VND 10,668 billion (including VND 636 billion in interest). The State participates in 895 billion VND, equivalent to 8% of the total investment; the remaining 9,773 billion VND is mobilized by investors.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction proposed land funds to pay investors according to the construction progress, including: Land plot 8-12 Le Duan (4.883 m2); land plot 2-4-6 Hai Ba Trung (6,080 m2); land plot 152 Tran Phu (30,972 m2).

Currently, Trung Nam Construction Investment Joint Stock Company (Trungnam Group) and Masterise Group Joint Stock Company are proposing to participate in the project investment. In particular, Trungnam Group has participated in the architectural design competition and carried out research and investment preparation steps since 2017.

According to the proposal, the project is expected to implement site clearance from the second quarter of 2026 to the second quarter of 2027.

Can Gio Bridge will start construction in the first quarter of 2027 and be completed and handed over in the fourth quarter of 2029.

Currently, Binh Khanh, Can Gio, An Thoi Dong and Thanh An communes (formerly Can Gio district) do not have a road directly connecting to the center of Ho Chi Minh City. The only traffic at present is Binh Khanh ferry, which is often overloaded, especially on weekends and holidays, causing prolonged congestion, hindering tourism and socio-economic development of Can Gio.

When built, Can Gio Bridge will connect directly to Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway (expected to be completed in June 2026) through the Rung Sac Road intersection, creating an important inter-regional axis.

In addition, the Can Gio coastal urban tourism area with a scale of 2,870 hectares is being implemented, with a planned population of 228,506 people and an expected number of visitors of nearly 9 million/year. The demand for traffic connecting to this urban area and the entire Can Gio district in the future is very large.

From July 1, 2025, after merging Ho Chi Minh City with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, the demand for traffic connections from the city center through Can Gio to Vung Tau will increase sharply. Ho Chi Minh City will build a sea-crossing road connecting Can Gio - Vung Tau.

From the above analysis, the Department of Construction assessed that the construction of Can Gio bridge to replace Binh Khanh ferry is necessary and urgent, contributing to expanding urban space, promoting tourism and logistics.
