Long Thanh Bridge repairs completed ahead of schedule

Expansion joint repair work at Long Thanh bridge on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway was completed 4 days ahead of schedule.

According to an announcement from Vietnam Expressway Engineering Services Joint Stock Company (VEC E), the repair of Long Thanh Bridge (from Dong Nai to Ho Chi Minh City) will take place from September 5 and be completed on September 19.

After the work was completed, from 11pm on September 19, the site was returned to allow vehicles to circulate through 2 lanes, helping to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

However, to ensure the quality of concrete at the joint between the expansion joint and the asphalt concrete surface, VEC E continues to limit the speed at the Long Thanh bridge repair location until September 23. After this time, traffic speed will be restored to normal.

Previously, from September 5, the expansion joint on Long Thanh bridge began to be repaired after discovering a broken rail.

The narrowing of the road surface while the traffic volume on the route is very large has caused congestion on the bridge and highway in Dong Nai.

The Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, with a total length of 55km and a scale of 4 lanes, was put into operation in 2016. Traffic volume on this expressway is continuously increasing, an average of nearly 12% per year, so traffic jams are frequent.

It is expected that by 2026, when Long Thanh airport comes into operation, traffic pressure on this highway will increase even more strongly.

In that context, the expansion of the expressway is being studied with the option of expanding the section from the Ring Road 2 intersection (Thu Duc City) to the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway intersection.

Accordingly, the section from the Ring Road 2 intersection to the Ring Road 3 intersection will be invested with 8 lanes according to the plan. The section from the Ring Road 3 intersection to the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway intersection will be invested with 10 lanes according to the plan.

Long Thanh Bridge will be invested in building a new bridge unit, with a scale similar to the current bridge, organizing traffic exploitation with a scale of 10 lanes (no emergency lanes will be arranged in advance, combined with traffic organization with 5 lanes on each side, 35m wide).

This expansion project has a total investment of nearly 15,000 billion VND. If approved, it will be implemented and completed by the end of 2027.
