Information from the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board (Traffic Board) said that allowing vehicles to travel through the underpass will contribute to reorganizing the traffic flow, serving the construction of the next items, specifically the construction package No. 10 - construction of overpasses N3 and N4 at the An Phu intersection.
The Mai Chi Tho - Dong Van Cong underpass is being constructed along Mai Chi Tho Avenue, through the intersection with the Dong Van Cong route.
The tunnel is 480m long, including 4 two-way lanes, with a total investment of more than 340 billion VND.

This is one of the main items of the An Phu intersection project - the largest and most modern project in Ho Chi Minh City today.
After many delays, this underpass has been completed and will be put into operation from noon on June 30. Previously, when the Mai Chi Tho - Dong Van Cong intersection was fenced off for construction from April 2024, the plan was to complete the tunnel on September 2, 2024, but this progress mark was not reached.
After that, the Traffic Department planned to open the road to traffic on April 30, 2025, but continued to be delayed because the drainage pumping station in the tunnel had not been completed.

As of June 29, the items in the tunnel have been completed and are ready to be put into operation. However, inside the tunnel, there are still traces of flooding due to the impact of the previous heavy rain.

In addition to the newly opened underpass, the An Phu intersection project also has another underpass under construction, directly connecting from the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway access road to Mai Chi Tho Avenue.
When completed, the two tunnels will be connected to each other, allowing cars to travel in two directions from the expressway to the Thu Thiem tunnel and vice versa, contributing to reducing pressure on existing routes.

The An Phu intersection project started construction at the end of 2022, with a total investment of more than VND 3,400 billion.
The project has a scale of three floors; in addition to the two-way underpass connecting the expressway with Mai Chi Tho Street, there are also overpasses for vehicles to turn in different directions; the ground has a central roundabout and a symbolic tower. Branches around the intersection have also been built to widen the route.
Up to now, the entire project has reached about 70% of the construction volume. The opening of the underpass is one of the important milestones, creating momentum to complete the remaining items in 2025 according to the plan.

With the role of connecting strategic traffic axes such as Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, Mai Chi Tho Avenue, Luong Dinh Cua, Nguyen Thi Dinh and Dong Van Cong streets, An Phu intersection holds a key position in the traffic network in the eastern area of the city.
This is also the gateway to Cat Lai port area - the largest container port in the country in terms of cargo output. Every day, this area records the traffic of more than 20,000 container trucks, putting great pressure on the transport infrastructure.
