Currently, in the premises of the Son La Provincial Museum and Library (belonging to the protection area of the Son La Prison Special National Monument), there are 3 dragon trees that have died for over 50 years.

According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, there is currently 1 tree that has been cut down, the remaining 2 trees have died but have not been handled.
A representative of the Son La Provincial Museum and Library said that from mid-2023 to the end of 2024, all three brain dragon trees above have dried, fallen leaves and died.
"The dead trees have a trunk circumference of 2.5 - 4m, about 30m high. Following the direction of the leaders of Son La province, 1 tree was cut down to ensure safety in accordance with regulations. Currently, there are still 2 trees that have not been cut down" - said a representative of the Son La Provincial Museum and Library.

To clearly identify the cause of tree death, the Son La Provincial Museum and Library has sent a document to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (under the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Son La Province) for coordination to clarify.
The provincial interdisciplinary inspection team also conducted a survey, checked the current status and drilled the tree trunks to determine the cause of the tree's death.
Initial results determined that all 3 brain dragon trees above were about 50 years old. Initial surveys using professional measures show that the trees are old, have an empty intestines, have signs of throbbing and are no longer able to recover.
All 3 trees did not show any signs of affecting the trees to death. For 1 tree that has been cut down, the wood collected is currently being gathered at the unit's headquarters to wait for the auction of assets to submit to the State budget according to regulations.

The interdisciplinary inspection team also proposed cutting down the remaining 2 trees to ensure aesthetics and safety.
Currently, in the premises of the Provincial Museum and Library, there are still 4 long-standing brain dragon trees that are still growing, however, the base is showing signs of being warped by termites, the tree shell is peeling a lot. The inspection team requested the Museum and the Library to take measures to care for and protect the trees.
