Recently, police in some localities discovered people taking advantage of superstition to commit fraud in cyberspace. Together with the police, the Ministry of Home Affairs is strengthening the implementation of inspections and checks on organizations and individuals taking advantage of religion for personal gain.

Catch fraudsters appropriating property

From information on the situation in cyberspace, Van Lang district police, Lang Son province discovered that Hoang had set up many closed groups on the social networking platform Facebook called "Dispelling evil spells - spirituality".

This group has a number of members ranging from 70,000 to 200,000 Facebook accounts. Taking advantage of social networks, Hoang "explosive" can cast a spell or neutralize the spell, then lead the victim to a virtual Zalo account to commit fraudulent acts to appropriate property. After understanding the rules of the subject's activities, Van Lang District Police established a special project to focus on verifying, fighting and arresting Hoang.

At the police station, Uong Huy Hoang ("Hoang" Hoang) confessed that because he did not have a stable job, loved to play, and was lazy to work, he had the intention of defrauding and appropriating property. Hoang himself did not have the ability to cast spells, dispel evil spells, or tell fortunes, but went to groups to get information on how to perform spiritual ceremonies and buy virtual Facebook accounts online. After that, Hoang used these accounts to join "spiritual dispelling spells" groups on the social network Facebook to find "prey" people who wanted to cast spells or dispel evil spells. .

The initial investigation determined that from around July 2023 until now, using the above methods and tricks, Hoang has committed fraud and appropriated the property of more than 70 victims in provinces and cities across the country (in including 1 victim in Lang Son province) and Vietnamese people living abroad, the total amount appropriated was about 900 million VND. Currently, the Police Department is continuing to expand the investigation of the case to handle the subject in accordance with the provisions of law.

Correcting illegal belief and religious activities

Recently, the issue of incorrect information on social networks, taking advantage of organizing superstitious festivals and festivals to profit, and causing discontent has received a lot of public attention. Voters in many localities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria - Vung Tau... have petitioned the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding this issue. Voters in Ho Chi Minh City proposed that the Ministry of Home Affairs have solutions to manage religious establishments, ensuring the correct principles and purposes of religion.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said that it also received feedback from citizens about some dignitaries, officials, and religious monks speaking and preaching on cyberspace that are inconsistent with the teachings and canon laws of the country. Religious organizations take advantage of organizing superstitious festivals and festivals to profit and cause discontent among the people.

To well implement state management of beliefs and religions, the Ministry of Home Affairs has coordinated with the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information; The Department of Foreign Information (Ministry of Information and Communications) strengthens State management of beliefs and religions in cyberspace, promoting propaganda on the situation of beliefs and religions in Vietnam, to counter organizations and individuals who take advantage of cyberspace to spread false information about the situation of beliefs and religions in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Home Affairs coordinates with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to develop regulations on coordination in State management of beliefs to strengthen State management of belief and religious festivals; Strengthen inspection and examination of organizations and individuals that take advantage of festivals, beliefs and religions to practice "superstition" for personal gain.
