Experts forecast that the South will have another heavy rain spell at the end of September

From mid to late September, Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces and cities are still likely to experience another widespread heavy rain.

The widespread heavy rain in Ho Chi Minh City and the South in recent days is in the typical weather pattern of September. Lao Dong Newspaper had an interview with Mr. Tran Van Hung - Deputy Director of the Southern Hydrometeorological Station about the cause of the rain, weather developments from now until the end of September and weather patterns to note in the coming time.

Sir, what is the cause of the heavy rain currently taking place in the South?

- On September 10, the Southern region in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular experienced widespread rain. In particular, Ho Chi Minh City recorded moderate to heavy rain over a wide area; the central area had many very heavy rain points, causing flooding on many roads. In addition, the southern Tay Ninh and coastal Dong Thap areas also recorded a few points of rain over 100 mm.

The reason for heavy rain is that the Southern region is located on the southern edge of the tropical convergence zone with its axis through the South Central region, combined with high-altitude wind convergence.

What is the difference between this rain and the average of many years in Ho Chi Minh City and the South?

- In the multi-year average data series, September is the main rainy month of Ho Chi Minh City, with the highest average annual rainfall at most stations in Ho Chi Minh City. Heavy rains over 100 mm are not unusual phenomena.

From now until the end of September, how will the rains in the South develop?

- Possibility of another widespread heavy rain spell in the period from mid to late September.

The total rainfall in September is generally approximately or lower than the multi-year average. Rainfall is reduced a lot in the central and northern areas of the city, 5-25% lower than the multi-year average, equivalent to a rainfall of 60-80 mm. The southern area of the city has a total rainfall of 10-50 mm compared to the multi-year average.

From now until the end of the rainy season, what weather patterns should be noted?

- The convergence zone still has its axis through the Central region and in the South China Sea, with the possibility of 1-2 more tropical cyclones appearing in the second half of September.

Thank you, sir!
