Lunar New Year holiday 2026: Civil servants and public employees will have 9 consecutive days off
The Ministry of Home Affairs has just announced the Lunar New Year holiday schedule in 2026. Accordingly, cadres, civil servants, public employees and workers in administrative agencies, public service agencies, and socio-political organizations will have a total of 9 consecutive days off.
The holiday includes 5 days according to regulations (01 days before Tet and 04 days after Tet) from Monday, February 16, 2026 (December 29, At Ty year) to Friday, February 20, 20th, 2026 (January 4, Binh Ngo year). Due to the consecutive 2 days off last weekend and 2 days off last weekend, the holiday schedule will be extended to 9 days.
During the Tet holiday, agencies and units must arrange forces to be on duty, ensuring timely handling of arising work; at the same time, deploy measures to stabilize the market, supply and demand of goods, and support production and business before, during and after Tet.
For employees who are not civil servants, public employees, and enterprises, they can choose their own leave:
01 day at the end of the year + 04 day at the beginning of the year; or
02 days at the end of the year + 03 days at the beginning of the year; or
03 days of the year + 02 days of the year.
Employers must notify the holiday schedule at least 30 days before applying, and if the holiday falls on a weekly holiday, employees will be entitled to compensatory leave according to the provisions of the Labor Code.
Enterprises are encouraged to let employees take a holiday similar to the holiday schedule of civil servants and public employees or negotiate a more favorable plan.
Spending nearly 11 million VND to buy plane tickets to return home for Tet
Before the news of a 9-day consecutive Tet holiday, many workers far from home have planned and hunted for air tickets and train tickets early to be able to return home for the Lunar New Year holiday.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thong (character's name has been changed, born in 1992 - Hanoi) currently working in Ho Chi Minh City. He said that when there was a Tet holiday schedule, he immediately planned and would return home with his family on February 14 (ie the 27th day of the Lunar calendar).
"Although there are still more than 2 months left until Tet, when I booked a plane ticket, it seemed late, because there were no more cheap tickets. I booked a one-way ticket, 2 adults' tickets, 1 children's ticket, the total cost was nearly 11 million VND. It would be like spending more than a month's salary on travel and returning home for Tet" - Mr. Thong shared.

Also sharing her plan to return home for the Lunar New Year 2026, Ms. Le Thi Van Anh (Nghe An) said: I am waiting for train tickets to open for sale. When there is information that the railway industry will open ticket sales for the 2026 Binh Ngo Lunar New Year on the channels, I will book train tickets to return home for Tet around February 13 (ie the 26th of the Lunar calendar).
Many people think that the 9-day Tet holiday is enough time to gather with their families to welcome the New Year, visit relatives for a long time to meet and update old stories. There are also many people planning long trips, traveling, and experiencing the Lunar New Year atmosphere in a distant place.
