Cold air will strengthen in the first days of November with light rain in many localities, especially in the northern mountainous region, where there are high mountains.
The winter in the North opens up the possibility of ice and snow in high mountains.
This is not only a fascinating natural phenomenon but also a highlight for tourism and the environment, along with impacts on agriculture, transportation and people's lives.
Areas such as Mau Son (Lang Son), Phja Oac (Cao Bang) and Phan Si Pang (Lao Cai) have recorded ice and snow many times.
Accordingly, at around 5:00 a.m. on December 31, 2024, the temperature at Fansipan peak was recorded at minus 1 degree Celsius, causing the steam to stop, creating a thin layer of ice covering the wooden floor and grass in the Fansipan peak area. This phenomenon repeated on the morning of January 1, 2025.
Previously, on January 22, 2024, the temperature at Mau Son peak, Lang Son province dropped below 0 degrees Celsius, ice and snow covered the mountain top, creating a beautiful and magical scene.
On the same day, the top of Phja Oac mountain (Nguyen Binh district, Cao Bang province) appeared frosty when the temperature dropped below 0 degrees Celsius. The price increase started to appear at 3:00 p.m. Trees cover with thick ice after light rain and cold winds.
Speaking with reporters, Mr. Hoang Quoc Huy - Head of Mau Son Hydrometeorological Station (Lang Son) - said that natural and climatic conditions for ice and snow to appear include strong cold air with the Northeast monsoon, when the cold air mass is close and deep.
Along with that, in the high air mass (for example 850 hPa), the temperature will be around -2 degrees Celsius, while the high mountain surface (< 0 degrees Celsius) will create conditions for frost/terrest.
fog, drizzle or light rain at low temperatures can also help freeze fog into ice or create snow.
In particular, a mountain height greater than 1,500 m will have a higher probability, the higher the elevation, the sooner and the more likely the appearance of ice and snow.
Experts also said that the winter of 2025 will bring clearer opportunities for the phenomenon of ice and snow in the high mountains of Northern Vietnam.
Especially Mau Son (Lang Son), Phja Oac (Cao Bang) and Phan Si Pang. However, not every year will there be heavy or prolonged snow and the exact day will depend on the time of coincidence between strong cold air, humidity, and altitude.
