On the afternoon of December 29, the People's Committee of Bac Gianh ward (Quang Tri province) held a surprise commendation ceremony for Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vien, Mr. Ngo Ba Van and Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc for their courageous acts of rescuing people on a night of heavy rain, freezing weather, with many potential dangers.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh - Chairman of Bac Gianh Ward People's Committee affirmed that the actions of the 3 men are very commendable, showing a sense of responsibility, compassion and noble gestures in everyday life. Timely commendation and reward aims to spread kind actions in the community.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vien said that at the time of the incident, he and his son only thought that if they were a little late, it could be dangerous for the lives of the young children. In conditions of heavy rain and darkness, everyone only had time to rush down to rescue people first, not thinking about anything else.
Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc, currently working at Quang Binh Power Transmission Company, said that when he discovered the victims in extremely dangerous situations, he, his father and Mr. Ngo Ba Van immediately jumped into the canal to rescue people, regardless of heavy rain and cold water.
According to Mr. Ngoc, the rescue action completely originated from an emergency situation, not thinking about being thanked or rewarded, especially when a child showed signs of drowning, the risk of drowning was very high.
Present at the ceremony, relatives of Ms. Hoang Thi Thu could not hide their emotion when they met the benefactors of the family again. Ms. Thu's husband said that if there was no timely help from the 3 brave men, the consequences could be very unpredictable.
As Lao Dong Newspaper reported, at about 9:30 pm on December 25, 2025, Ms. Hoang Thi Thu was driving a motorbike carrying her child and a classmate when she unfortunately had an accident, falling into the water canal section of Gia Hy bridge, Bac Gianh ward in a night of heavy rain and cold weather. Discovering the incident, 3 men did not hesitate to jump into the water, joining forces to bring the victims ashore safely.
