From the beginning of 2026 to now, the large construction site of the Investment and Construction Project of runway No. 2 and synchronous works at Phu Cat Airport area is always bustling and lively.
The project has a total investment of more than 3,200 billion VND, the expected construction time is 10 months, invested by the Gia Lai Provincial Traffic and Civil Works Project Management Board. In which, the main construction package is undertaken by the Truong Son Construction Corporation - ACC - DACINCO Joint Venture, with a value of nearly 1,960 billion VND.
The goal of the project is to ensure safe and efficient civil aviation exploitation, serving military tasks, meeting the socio-economic development needs of the province.
At the construction site, more than 1,000 workers, engineers and nearly 700 vehicles and construction equipment simultaneously with the spirit of "3 shifts, 4 crews", working day and night to speed up progress.
The sound of excavators, dump trucks, and concrete mixing stations operating continuously creates a picture of enthusiastic labor in the first days of the new year. On equipment, machinery, and national flags fluttering, creating a vibrant emulation atmosphere to welcome the 14th National Party Congress.
Before the 2026 New Year holiday, rain and unfavorable weather often occurred in Gia Lai province, causing construction progress to be interrupted. Right in the first days of the new year, when weather conditions were favorable, all personnel and machinery were mobilized to closely follow the construction site, constructing "overcoming sun and rain" to compensate for the affected progress. Up to now, the investor has handed over about 60% of the site.
Mr. Cao The Tuan - Site Commander, ACC Aviation Construction Corporation - said that the main task currently is to build the foundation, the construction teams are deployed simultaneously with the intensity of 3 consecutive shifts. For more than 3 months, almost all engineers and workers have been stuck at the construction site, working during holidays, festivals, and Tet.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, a representative of the Gia Lai Provincial Traffic and Civil Works Project Management Board said that the urgent working atmosphere from the beginning of the year shows the determination to soon bring key projects to completion, creating motivation for socio-economic development for the province and the region.
In order to create a vibrant atmosphere of emulation to celebrate the 14th National Party Congress, construction units simultaneously planted national flags on the equipment heads. Currently, all machinery on the construction site is operating at full capacity, even day and night, with red flags fluttering," this representative said.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tu Cong Hoang - Vice Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, Phu Cat Airport plays a particularly important role in promoting socio-economic development, while ensuring national defense and security for the South Central Coast, Central Highlands in general and Gia Lai in particular.
However, currently the airport is overloaded, especially during the peak summer tourist season and holidays, Tet. Notably, the existing runway system has been in operation for nearly 60 years, exceeding nearly 3 times the designed lifespan, starting to degrade, posing a risk of debris, causing unsafe operation.
To effectively promote its advantages, Phu Cat Airport needs to be prioritized for synchronous, modern, and sustainable investment, worthy of its position as a domestic airport with international routes and an important airport in the national defense system.
After the runway No. 2 is completed, Phu Cat Airport will ensure the reception of Code C aircraft such as A320, A321 and equivalents, and is also capable of receiving Code E aircraft when needed.
