Night fleeing flood

Quang Tri - During heavy rain, people stayed up all night to move their assets and livestock, fleeing the flood in the rushing water.

Night-time on the water

Early in the morning of November 1, when the fog was still covering the mountain slopes, the roofs of houses in Phong Nha commune (Quang Tri province) were bustling with the sound of people, footsteps, and small calls in the midst of floods. The water from Khe Su Lake rose, flooding into the yard of the house, forcing people to move their livestock and property to avoid damage.

After many days of heavy rain, the whole area was submerged in silver water. Many roads were cut off, and water was rolling through the small alleys. People are both worried and urgently moving their belongings, trying to keep whatever they can.

At around 4am, in the white rain, Mr. Nguyen Van Trien's family was still in a hurry. He and his wife collected some bags of rice, loaded them into a truck, and quickly took them to the neighbor's house to send to him.

He sadly said: "I almost never slept last night. The rain strewn on the corrugated iron roof, the water rose so quickly that every few dozen minutes, we had to check the battery level to see where it was.

He said that at around 3am, his wife woke up in panic, saying that the water had flooded into the yard: "I didn't expect the water of Khe Su Lake to rise so quickly. A few years ago, there was heavy rain but it was still time to prepare, but now, after just one night, the garden is flooded. I thought that this year's flood season had passed, who would have thought there would still be such a fierce match".

This is the second time in the rainy season that Mr. Trien has had to clean up floodwaters. But this time, the water rose suddenly and flowed rapidly, leaving many families in low-lying areas unable to react.

Love for the village

Not far from Mr. Trien's house, in a small old wooden house, Ms. Tran Thi Uyen is still struggling to clean up. Living alone when her children were all out alone, she could only run around to move her belongings when the water started to flood into the yard, then panicked and called her neighbors to help.

"I have 2 pigs with a small vegetable garden to make a living. Who would have thought the water would rise so quickly, without having time to react? Luckily, the neighbors arrived in time to help me move the pigs to higher ground, otherwise I would have lost them all, she said, her voice was shy but her eyes lit up gratitude.

In difficult times, the village spirit is lit up again with warmth in the cold rain. The hands connected, guiding each other through the rising water, became a solid support for those who were lonely like Ms. Uyen.

Amidst the sudden flood, the spirit of sharing is still bright, the enduring strength has helped people in flooded areas to hold firm through many strong water seasons.

Up to now, the water has begun to recede, local authorities are still implementing plans to evacuate people from dangerous areas, ensuring the safety of people's lives and property.

By noon on November 1, the whole province of Quang Tri recorded more than 124 flooded spots. More than 3,600 households had their houses flooded, 103 schools gave 28,513 students temporary school days, and 30 landslides. The evacuation work continues to be implemented, so far 505 households with 1,512 people have been evacuated in many areas that are deeply flooded and at risk of landslides.

Millions of arms turn to compatriots affected by storms and floods

Consecutive storms and floods have caused many deaths, missing and injuries; many houses and production and business establishments have had their roofs blown off and suffered heavy damage. People across the northern mountainous provinces and the central provinces are struggling to cope with floods and heavy losses in human lives and property due to floods and thunderstorms.

"A piece of food when hungry is worth a package when full", with the spirit of mutual love that has always been a beautiful image of the Vietnamese people, the Golden Heart Social Charity Fund calls on domestic and foreign philanthropists to join hands to share with people affected by floods to have food, clothing, shelter, students have books to go to school...
