On September 2, Vinh Linh District People's Committee confirmed that on August 30, Vinh Linh District People's Committee issued a decision to announce a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Hien Thanh Commune (Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province).
Previously, on August 27, upon receiving information about the buffalo herd in Liem Cong Tay village (Hien Thanh commune), the authorities conducted an inspection and took samples for testing.
Test results showed that the sample was positive for foot-and-mouth disease virus.
On August 28, cattle suspected of having foot-and-mouth disease were found in three villages, Cay Tam, Thuc, and Moi in Vinh O commune (Vinh Linh district), so samples were taken for testing.
As of August 30, 31 buffaloes and cows in Hien Thanh and Vinh O communes had foot-and-mouth disease, the source of the disease originating locally.
Previously, as reported by Lao Dong Newspaper, foot and mouth disease broke out in Huong Hoa and Dakrong districts on cattle and buffalo. The disease started from cows supplied by the project to the people, then spread widely.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri province, as of August 30, in Quang Tri province, foot-and-mouth disease has occurred in 8 communes and towns of 3 districts: Huong Hoa, Dakrong and Vinh Linh. The total number of cattle and buffaloes infected with the disease is 462; 13 died and were buried; the number of cattle that have recovered from symptoms is 193.
According to local authorities, one of the reasons for the rapid spread of foot-and-mouth disease is that the cattle and buffalo herds in Quang Tri province have run out of vaccines. The lack of vaccines is due to difficulties in bidding. Quang Tri province has requested the Central Government and has just been granted vaccines. The vaccines have now been transferred to localities for vaccination of cattle and buffalo herds.
