The prolonged heavy rain in late July and early August 2025 seriously damaged National Highway 12 (the section connecting from Nu Ngam commune, Dien Bien province to communes in the old Dien Bien Dong district).

According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper in late October 2025, on National Highway 12, the section passing through Na Son, Xa Dung, Muong Luan communes, the repair work is still taking place, but also facing many difficulties due to the mountainous terrain and large volume of landslides.
At Km242 (Trai Bo village area, Na Son commune), more than a dozen workers are raising stone cages to reinforce the negative slope, trying to keep the roadbed after the flash flood.

Not far away, at Km 248 (Ha Dung commune), machinery such as excavators and bulldozers were mobilized to level thousands of cubic meters of rock and soil from the positive slope.
However, many locations still pose a serious risk to traffic safety.
In particular, at Km 243 (Trai Bo village, Na Son commune), the negative slope section was seriously eroded, eating into the water and losing half of the road surface and has not been treated. This location creates a dangerous "trap", with the potential risk of traffic accidents at any time, especially at night or in slippery rain.

Previously, the road section of more than 30km long, from Km 215 (Nua Ngam commune) to Km246 (Na Son commune) alone, had about 300 large and small landslides, including about 30 particularly serious landslides.
A representative of Dien Bien Road 2 Joint Stock Company (National Highway 12 management unit) said that the unit has mobilized human resources, machinery including excavators, bulldozers and other specialized vehicles, in coordination with local authorities to urgently fix the problem.

However, the repair work is facing many difficulties due to the large amount of landslides, stretching for many kilometers, combined with steep mountain pass terrain, causing difficulties for construction forces and material transportation.
In addition, many sections of the route have been eroded deep into the roadbed. The construction unit had to mobilize a large amount of soil and rock to level and reconstruct the roadbed.
Recently, Mr. Le Thanh Do - Chairman of Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee - has just signed a decision on promulgating an order to build an emergency project on natural disasters to respond to and overcome damage to road traffic infrastructure on local routes (due to the impact of rains from July 18 to July 28 and from July 31 to August 2, 2025).

The total investment cost for the project is 47.055 billion VND. Capital from support funds from the Central Government and Bac Ninh province to overcome the consequences of floods; funding for road economic activities and other legal capital sources.
The Department of Construction of Dien Bien province was assigned as the investor. The construction time is expected to be in 2025.
The project will be implemented on the routes of the communes of Xa Dung, Na Son, Tia Dinh, Muong Luan, Phinh Giang and Muong Lan.
Including the following routes: from Km 262+100/National Highway 12 (pa Vat) to the center of Tia Dinh commune (old); from Km 250+030/National Highway 12 (old Phi Nhu intersection) to the center of Xa Dung commune (old) - Km 21+900/DT.146 (from Phi Nhu intersection to the center of the new Xa Dung commune)...
The Provincial People's Committee also assigned the Department of Construction to coordinate with relevant agencies and units to organize and implement further work to ensure compliance with legal regulations.
