Hang Bang Canal, which flows through Districts 5 and 6, is one of the main waterways of the Cho Lon area. However, for a long time, the canal has been frequently polluted, affecting the lives of local people. Therefore, the project to upgrade and renovate the canal plays an important role for local people.
According to Lao Dong's records on January 9, in the Hang Bang canal area, the section through District 5, extending from Ngo Nhan Tinh Street to Van Tuong Canal, part of phase 2 of the Hang Bang canal upgrading and renovation project (District 5), after more than a year of construction, it is now basically completed, many households are renovating their houses, relocating electricity and water infrastructure.
At the construction site, workers are urgently paving the sidewalks and planting trees to prepare for the inauguration of the project to upgrade and renovate the Hang Bang Canal section (District 5) on January 17, 2025.
Living next to this canal for decades, Ms. Hua Ngoc (60 years old, residing in District 5) said she is very happy that the drainage and canal renovation project is about to be completed and put into use.
"This canal was polluted many years ago, all the domestic wastewater was poured here. Therefore, when I saw the project completed, the people had a better living environment, I was very happy and hoped that the people's business would be more favorable," Ms. Ngoc happily said.
Mr. Lam Van Bua (living in District 5) said that the water in this canal used to be clear, but over the past 30 years, the canal has become heavily polluted. "The canal used to be quite wide, the water was clear, but later on, people crowded together and built slum houses on the canal. The canal gradually became small, narrow and polluted, with a lot of garbage and a foul smell. Many times when I passed by, I couldn't stand it, I just wanted to go quickly," said Mr. Bua.
According to the representative of the Compensation and Site Clearance Board of District 5, in the project construction area, there are 126 houses subject to land acquisition along the canal on Phan Van Khoe and Bai Say streets, in Ward 13, District 5.
Regarding resettlement, people are supported to resettle at apartment building 243 Tan Hoa Dong in Ward 14, District 6. The locality also supports people with expenses such as moving costs, training costs, career conversion, job search, rewards for good compliance with the relocation, etc.
Accordingly, the Hang Bang canal renovation project has 3 phases, and has completed and put into use phase 1, from Binh Tien to Lo Gom canal.
Phase 2 from Pham Dinh Ho Street to Van Tuong Canal (flowing through District 5, 6) with a total length of 500m, 344 affected cases is expected to be completed before April 30, 2025.
Phase 3 (section from Pham Dinh Ho street to Binh Tien street) has 391 affected cases that need to be cleared, but this section has not been implemented yet.
