On August 27, in an exchange with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, a representative of Thanh Son Commune People's Committee, Dong Nai city, said that they had organized the disbursement of more than 1.9 billion VND to support 85 households affected by wild elephants in the commune (from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2023).
Funding support from the commune-level budget reserve for 2026.
The support is a practical sharing of the damage that people have suffered, contributing to helping households have more conditions to overcome difficulties, stabilize their lives and continue production.
Currently, about 30 elephants are recorded in Dong Nai.
Since 2013, the People's Committee of Dong Nai province (now Dong Nai city) has approved and implemented the Dong Nai Elephant Conservation Emergency Project, building an electric fence system to prevent conflicts between people and elephants, with a total length of more than 72km.
In addition to electric fences, the Project also invests in 3 surveillance huts, 8 dangerous warning signs, 6 artificial lakes providing water and minerals for elephants, and more than 18km of parallel patrol roads.
However, wild elephants still overcome electric fences to residential areas to search for food, causing damage to property, crops and threatening the safety of people in the forest area.
Localities with many elephants appearing are Tri An ward, Tan Loi commune, Phu Ly commune, Thanh Son commune, Dan Lua commune, Ta Lai commune.
Dong Nai City has established 6 rapid response teams in key areas with about 75 members, operating under an inter-sectoral coordination mechanism. The tasks of the teams are to monitor and warn when elephants approach residential areas; support people to relocate property; prevent people from approaching elephants; handle emergencies; record damage caused by elephants to serve as a basis for policy advice to support people.
