Stock market on August 26: VN-Index surpasses 1,800 points

Gia Miêu |

Many pillar stocks with blooming trading sessions contributed to pulling the VN-Index up nearly 30 points, surpassing resistance zones to close above the 1,820 point mark.

Entering today's trading session (August 26), in the morning session, profit-taking pressure still appeared in the resistance zone of 1,800-1,810 points, causing VN-Index to fluctuate and accumulate in a narrow range with red dominating.

However, information about FTSE quantifying the proportion of Vietnamese stocks has provided psychological support for the market. According to FAQ document version 1.3 announced on the evening of August 25, 2026 Hanoi time, Vietnam will begin to be included in the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (FTSE GEIS) system from September 21, 2026, after being transferred from the Frontier market to the Secondary Emerging market. This process is carried out in 4 phases and is expected to be completed in September 2027.

Notably, FTSE Russell expects Vietnam to account for 0.488% of the FTSE Emerging All Cap Index when the entire roadmap is completed. In the initial phase from September 2026, with 10% of the potential investment ratio applied, Vietnam's ratio in this index is at about 0.049.

This information then helped VN-Index conquer the 1,800 point mark again. Market diễn biến (developments) had strong fluctuations in the afternoon session with the main driving force coming from the large stock group. The pillar stock group, with "leading" being VIC stock, continued to pull VN-Index up nearly 30 points, helping the index surpass the 1,800 point mark.

At the end of the session, VN-Index increased by 29.91 points (+1.67%) to 1,821.32 points with 182 gainers and 125 losers. However, liquidity has not improved much, showing that investors are still cautious, cash flow is only focused on some leading stocks and has not spread to the entire market.

Total trading volume in today's session only reached 731.2 million units, worth 19,882.5 billion VND, down 13% in volume and 7% in value compared to yesterday's session. In which, negotiated transactions contributed 144.4 million units, worth 3,517 billion VND.

After 3 consecutive net buying sessions, foreign investors turned to net selling 37 billion VND on the HOSE exchange. Notably, the bank stock group is on the list of strongly sold by foreign investors.

The highlight of the market is that Vingroup's shares widened their gains, and the banking group also gradually returned, especially Techcombank's TCB shares. From the red color in the morning session, TCB shares unexpectedly received large demand, absorbing all the outstanding selling volume and pulling it straight to the ceiling price of 33,450 VND with a total matched order of more than 39 million units and still having a ceiling buy order of more than 5.5 million units.

TCB shares traded sublimely after information that BNP Paribas of France and KB Kookmin Bank of Korea are negotiating separately to buy at least 15% of Techcombank's shares as a strategic investor, the deal could be worth about 2 billion USD.

Vingroup, VIC and VRE extended the increase momentum with closing rates of +4.31% to 230,000 VND and +1.59% to 25,600 VND respectively. While VHM returned to reference, VPL decreased by 1.7%.

Regarding cash flow, SHB and VIX are still the codes with the most active trading with liquidity of 50 million units and 47.8 million units respectively, standing above TCB.

After a period of adjustment and accumulation with reduced liquidity and unstable fluctuations, the stock market has had consecutive sessions of quite good liquidity improvement, above the average level, showing that cash flow is improving better in the market. The market is having many expected drivers such as market upgrades, state capital divestment plans, and foreign investors are gradually cutting off strong net selling streaks from the beginning of the year to now...

However, many securities companies still do not recommend disbursement or chasing purchases when VN-Index is in the price range of 1,800 points. For investors with below-average proportions, they can still consider increasing proportions when the market adjusts, accumulating with the expectation that the index may surpass the strong resistance zone. Focus on quality businesses, in the best growing industry groups today.
