On May 7, the Office of the People's Committee of Dong Thap province confirmed that Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Thap province Pham Thanh Ngai has signed a decision recognizing 3 localities including: Tan Long, Long Khanh and Long Phu Thuan as island communes in the province.
This is considered an important step to create conditions for localities to access specific policies, promote socio-economic development, and strengthen national defense and security in border and riverine areas.

According to the issued decision, the recognition of island communes is carried out on the basis of fully meeting the criteria according to current regulations of the Government and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Specifically, the decision is based on Decree No. 128/2025/ND-CP of the Government on decentralization of internal affairs management; Decision No. 40/2025/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister stipulating criteria for recognition of island communes. In addition, the recognition also received the consensus of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee according to Notice No. 550-TB/TU dated April 13, 2026.

According to current regulations, island communes will enjoy many special preferential policies on infrastructure investment, transportation, social security, insurance, education, health and production development support suitable to the specific conditions of island and river areas.
Previously, on December 31, 2025, the Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee signed a decision recognizing Tan Thoi and Tan Phu Dong as island communes after arranging administrative units in 2025.
